View Full Version : BOY MEETS WORLD Spin Off Series in Development at Disney Channel w/ Savage and Fishel
ryan423 11-03-2012, 12:44 AM The world has met Cory Matthews — is it time now to meet his daughter? The Disney Channel is in the early stages of developing a Boy Meets World sequel series called Girl Meets World, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Sources say that the cable network is trying to land original series stars Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel to revisit their roles of sweethearts Cory and Topanga, who married before their ABC sitcom ended its seven-season run. The new series would center on their preteen daughter.
Since wrapping Boy, Savage’s TV guest-star gigs have included Bones, Chuck and Without a Trace. Fishel’s post-Boy work includes National Lampoon Presents Dorm Daze and hosting Style Network’s The Dish.

I really like this idea!!! :D
They would HAVE HAVE HAVE to include of course Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel, but also, I would like to see some of the old characters too. Like Uncle Shawn!! Oh, and Eric!!! I would also want Feeny to return if that was possible?!
But this is awesome news!!!
hawkeye123 11-03-2012, 02:05 AM I love this idea. I hope they do it and, I wish more shows would do that.
gilligan fanatic 11-03-2012, 12:54 PM If it wasn't on the Disney Channel I would be more excited-lol I would rather see a family type sitcom then a preteen type show.
mets82 11-03-2012, 01:23 PM This might be tough to pull off on a network like Disney. I will say that if Eric comes back, he acts like he did in the beginning of the series and not like the idiot he was in the final couple of seasons. Everything he said and did in the past couple of seasons annoyed the hell out of me.
spunkygirl 11-03-2012, 04:56 PM Eric was fine in the final seasons, he truly had a heart of gold
I think this series sounds good, I would rather it be on ABC Family than Disney though. Disney will eff it up
retrofan05 11-03-2012, 05:13 PM I like the idea in theory, but Disney shows today are so overly goofy and cheesy. I just worry that the show will be riddled with overacting and an obnoxious laugh track. I think "Girl Meets World" would fit better on ABC Family or on ABC's Friday night comedy block with Last Man Standing and Malibu Country. ABC Family for instance, is already airing reruns of Boy Meets World, so it would fit perfectly there.
hawkeye123 11-03-2012, 11:10 PM I would prefer it too be more family and, real life orriented aswell. But at this point i'll take what I can get. I hope it's god and, they don't make it too goofy.

Well, if it's on Disney, let's hope it's more like Good Luck Charlie and less like A.N.T. Farm.
PrettyinPink55 11-04-2012, 03:51 PM Well, if it's on Disney, let's hope it's more like Good Luck Charlie and less like A.N.T. Farm.
I'll second that!!! Even though I love A.N.T. Farm, it is goofy!!
Good Luck Charlie is exceptional!! :D
But I think if it's on ABC Family, it'll give them more leeway to talk about more serious issues that Disney tends to shy away from.

Agreed. If they're going to make a true sequel, it shouldn't be a watered down version of the original.

Agreed when is it supposed too start? Anybody know?
PrettyinPink55 11-05-2012, 12:10 AM I think it's still in very early development stages and that they haven't even gotten Ben or Danielle to sign on.

Lily Nicksay played sister Morgan during the first two years, before getting replaced by an older actress.
spunkygirl 11-06-2012, 07:23 PM Question: This Boy Meets World sequel series is all I have been able to think about since Friday. Anything else you can tell us about it? —Amanda
Ausiello: I’m going to call this Amanda Meets Scoop: Cory and Topanga’s Girl Meets World kiddo is a 13-year-old named Riley who’s full of life, super positive and very loyal to her friends. She’s got a slightly older brother, Elliot, and – this may make fans very happy– her dad is her history teacher. Yup: The Feen-ee has become the Feeny! The show also is casting Riley’s best friend, a dark, edgy, acerbic girl named Maya who’s probably not as pessimistic as she seems.

We thought it might be too good to be true, but the "Boy Meets World" sequel series "Girl Meets World" is moving forward -- in fact, Disney is casting the pilot episode as we speak.
The pilot will be executive produced and written by Michael Jacobs, who served as executive producer of the original series, and it's set to start shooting in February. There hasn't been any official confirmation as to whether Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have signed on, but given her playful tweets and the fact that it's moving forward, we can say the chances are very, very good.
In a flash-forward sequence in the original series, the show hinted that Cory and Topanga would have a daughter named "Beverly Glen" -- but in "Girl Meets World," we'll instead be introduced to 13-year-old Riley Matthews.
Here's how she's described in the official casting breakdown: "13 years old, indelible personality, an adorable girl on the cusp of whatever comes next in life, and wanting to rush into it head first. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and spends most of her time juggling the obstacles that life throws her way... there is no obstacle in this girl's world that can dampen her bright spirit and eternal optimism."
Sounds pretty good, right? In the series, Cory and Topanga also have a 14-year-old son, Elliot, who is a bit of a know-it-all when it comes to bossing his kid sister around.
Oh -- and did we mention that Cory is a seventh grade history teacher? Specifically, Riley's seventh grade history teacher. We always knew he'd follow in Mr. Feeny's footsteps.
Just as Cory had Shawn, Riley has a thick-as-thieves BFF of her own. We can't wait to meet Maya, Riley's best friend -- who is different from Riley in every way. She's a pessimist, and described as "darker and less trusting" than Riley. She's never known her father, and even though she's not a good student by any means, she looks to her history teacher, Cory, as a father figure. She's described as having "acerbic wit" and being "absolutely magnetic in attracting or intimidating the people in her sphere as she cares to. Dark and edgy, but just as fiercely loyal to Riley as Riley is to her."
We're already obsessed. Weigh in below in the comments section with your thoughts (and, obviously, dream casting suggestions!)

That sounds awesome. Thanks for all the information. I can't wait for it too start. I just watched season 6 of boy meets world the other day. I thought it was one of the best seasons.
robyrob 11-06-2012, 10:09 PM sounds good, hopefully Daniel Fishel and Ben Savage can sign on
Adamantium 11-09-2012, 04:45 PM "Boy Meets World" is my third favorite sitcom of all-time (just behind NewsRadio and Taxi). I watched BMW when it debuted on ABC back in 1993 all the way to it's finale in 2000. At the time it ended and went to the Disney Channel, I didn't have The Disney Channel, so my sister and I paid for it so we could (in our minds) record all the episodes and then get rid of that channel. Plans didn't work. Disney butchered so many episodes and even skipped some. Heck, they even used the fourth season theme song to cover the first four seasons. It was not good. Finally in 2004, however, the first season was released on DVD. I was happy to have BMW back in my life, even if it was only the first season, which was my least favorite. Then season two and three were released. Then there was a pause. No more releases and I was ticked off. The later years were always my favorite (season five being my favorite). Eventually I moved out of my parents house (at a much older age then Cory did, lol) and about a year later, Lionsgate released season four, with plans to release the rest. Now I own all 7 seasons and have just started rewatching all the episodes from #1 to #158 (I'm currently on disc 1 of season 2). I love BMW but it was a struggle to get them all on DVD.
When I heard the news of "Girl Meets World", I was very, very happy. Not because it sounds like a great new show to me but because it meant there was still interest in BMW (I wasn't aware of how popular the show was until I got this GMW news) and also because it shows how much Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel loved the show, if they're willing to come back and play those characters again. It's always great when the actors love the show as much as the audience and it's not just a paycheck to them.
Here's what I think the show will be (and it's not good for those who want to see everybody back again but it might still be a good show on it's own). The main character of "Girl Meets World" will be Riley Matthews. It's gonna be her show. This won't be like "The New Leave It To Beaver", where that show focused on a grown up Beaver, who had kids. This show will be about the kids, in my opinion. Riley, her best friend Maya and Riley's brother Elliot along with Cory (aka Mr. Matthews) because he's got two roles - that of father and teacher. So I see Cory with a much bigger role than Topanga. There will probably be a couple more kids Riley's age (including her Uncle Josh, who's around their age) to join the show but that'll be it.
As far as guest stars, I could see Uncle Eric showing up but NOT as a regular. Mainly because Will Friedle has said he's retired from on-screen acting. He's strcitly doing voiceover work. So maybe they can convince him to do one or two episodes. I would be surprised (plesantly) if Eric appears in more than that or even becomes a regular. Shawn would be a great guest star. I almost think he's too complex a character to be in the show as a regular and not have most of the episodes about him and his drama. I couldn't see him as just Riley's dad's best friend because of that. Then again, maybe by this point in his life, he's finally mellowed out and is just enjoying life but even so, we never saw Alan and Amy's best friends (as regulars) so it would seem out of place to show Cory and Topanga's best friends as regulars.
Maybe once Cory and Topanga had their second child, they wanted to be back "home" in Philadelphia and moved back there. Shawn and Eric chose to stay in New York which is why they won't be seen in the new show. Alan, Amy, Morgan and Josh could be seen more often then (who doesn't want to see Alan and Amy as GRANDPARENTS?!). That way we could also get Feeny back (though again, not as a regular because I don't know if William Daniels would want to do it).
This new show will answer a lot of questions I've had since the show ended and that makes me both excited and nervous. I may not like the answers given and in my mind other things happened to this group of sitcom characters. Did Shawn and Angela reunite a year later? Did Eric become a Weather Man and has he met a potential wife yet? When did Feeny retire for good? Did Josh continue to age faster then normal and is now OLDER then Cory? ;)
One final note about Cory's job. When I first read that Cory is going to be a 7th grade History teacher, it sounded so dumb to me. Then I got thinking and it's actually quite nice. He was so touched by his mentor, Mr. Feeny that he followed in his footsteps to become a "Feeny" to other kids. That's really nice.

You make some really great points, Adamantium.
Ideally, I still wish that Eric, Shawn, Feeny and some of our other favorite characters would be a part of the show, but for reasons that you stated above, that probably won't happen. Or those characters wouldn't play as principal a role on the new show. The focus will be on Riley.
I'll just be happy if Danielle and Ben sign on!!!
I'm super excited about this show though. It'll be interesting to see BMW from a girl's perspective in 2012 and how that compares and contrasts from the show we all knew and loved. I hope that from Danielle's tweets this means that they have both signed on board!!
Really really looking forward to this show!! :D
I too enjoyed the later seasons of BMW the best too!!! :) I loved growing up with Corey and look forward to growing up with Riley!!
