View Full Version : Being Prepared for Hurricane Sandy

Theres a hurricane coming up in the next day or two. Btw, thoughts to all who are going to be in the hurricane.

I was wondering how are you going to prepare for the hurricane? I have flashlights and bought non-perishable food just in case the power goes out but else can you do?

I looked to see if I can find a battery tv but I dont think they make them anymore. If they do, where would I be able to find one?

I dont have Apps, I-Pads, I-Phones, Tablets etc. Now the power does go out would the I-Pads, I-Phones etc. work? Arent you able to watch TV and have internet service with those things? I really dont know as Im not technically adapted to all this technology. Are they worth purchasing for cases like a hurricane or a blizzard?

I'm going to be back in the stone age if the lights go out. I'll probably go to the store tomorrow and get some food that doesn't need to be heated up. I'm not sure how bad it will be where I live. I just had the news on and they said winds will average about 35 MPH with some gusts getting up to 60. A flash flood warning is going to be in effect tomorrow through Tuesday too. I hope everyone that is in the path stays safe.

NOAA's latest forecast model has the storm making landfall in Delaware, then going inland over Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York City. It is expected to collide with an arctic air mass overland along with a storm coming from the west. Some forecast models are calling for several feet of heavy snow in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, with high winds as well. Heavy rain and winds would pound pretty much the entire Eastern Seaboard, causing flooding and major power outages. Still hoping the storm will skirt the coast and go out to sea, but that is looking less and less likely:

My family is set with bottled water, propane camping stove, canned food, batteries, flashlights. The only thing I won't have is my laptop. :(

I work at a warehouse club in Virginia and we were slammed today! It was so packed, everyone was buying everything. I run the dairy cooler (milk, eggs, cheese, yougurt, etc.) and it was barren when I came in this morning, I got a feeling it will only be worse tomorrow and Monday.

I'm always prepared for situations when I may not be able to leave the house (bad weather) or when the power may go out.

I keep a lot of bottled water frozen in its own little freezer so I can use them to keep some items lasting a little longer, like milk and frozen food.

I have a portable oven/heater so I can prepare food that needs to be cooked.

I have tons of flashlights, batteries, matches, candles, first aid kits...

I have a friend in the service who gave me some of those MRE's (Meals-Ready-to-Eat) that The Army uses when they're out in the field. Some of the food is disgusting, but they're made a certain way to have lots of nutrients. It's basically crackers, cheese, fruit, beef sticks and a main entree which can include chicken, beef... and comes with a flameless heater which is very handy.

Those have a shelf life of 6 years and I have approx. 30 of them. Had them for a few years now.

I went shopping today and stocked up on canned food and hygiene/medical items.

I also got some extra items like hard candy, chewing gum, instant coffee, whiskey, smokes, magazines...

Thats good that your prepared. I went to the store, like I mentioned earlier and tomorrow morning I will get a newspaper and some chips or something.

Now it was mentioned above about not having a laptop when the power goes out. If you have a mobile device (App, I-Phone, Tablet etc.) can you still have internet service and tv by using those devices when the power goes out?

I might have to invest in something like that because I actually looked to see if there were any battery televisions and I dont think they make them anymore.

I have one of those battery operated tvs. I tried to use it when we lost power for 3 days from a tornado. It's not digital and we only had one analog station left and it was The Home Shopping Channel so I didn't get much use out of it. I ended up listening to my handy transister radio instead.

I have my physical therapy scheduled for monday and tuesday, I hope I don't have to postpone it since exercise is important for my condition.

The great thing about this place (my p.t. place) is; it's just down the street so I can just ride over in my wheelchair which is great (except when it rains or snows) because my condition prevents me from driving.

Long Beach, New York is already in big trouble...that's very close to where I am....good thing I don't need to go out. I've got plenty of food and kibble for my pets. And if the power goes out, cooking is still possible thanks to a gas stove.

Thanks, guys. It's pretty bad right now, but I suppose it's a lucky thing that the tree didn't crash into the window. Right now the tree is leaning against the roof and making all sorts of crazy, loud noise. It's too dark to really see just how much damage was done. I'll have to call the insurance company tomorrow. As usual with these kinds of storms, the media is filled with "sob stories" about those who didn't prepare and are now "desperate" for help from "The Government".

You need to prepare for these things BEFORE they hit. Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30. Every June 1 I go through a little ritual, making sure all my emergency supplies are stocked to optimal levels. These include Checking all the Flashlights, making sure there are enough Batteries to power them. I make sure the Weather Radio works as well. I fire up the Generator, making sure it's operational. I go to the Gas Station and fill seven five-gallon Containers to use on my Truck, Scooter and generator if needed. I then make sure the pantry is filled with non-perishable foods, The Backyard Grill has ample Fuel, and I have at least a two week supply of bottled water. It sets me back about $500.00, but its better to be safe than sorry. When the season ends, I use the supplies as I normally would use them, from december to March my Food and Gas expenses are practically nil! :)

Then on June 1 the cycle begins again.
