There was a story released on SitcomsOnline about the new host of the Today show and once my TV guide came in the mail the same story was inside but it was old news. So I have no choice but to end my subscription because all TV news is released on this site in addition to other online sites

This was the story that was released on here and was old in TV guidie

It's sad, because I used to devour the TV Guide every week. I'd look forward to "new TV Guide day." I gave up on it about a year before they got rid of the local editions. That's when they phased out my local edition (Spokane) and merged it into the "Eastern Washington Edition."

From age 8 or 9 until I was about 23, I looked forward to "new TV Guide" day. I would take the new issue into my bedroom every week, read most of the articles, and devour the listings. And when the Fall Preview issue was published? Forget about it; that was like Christmas in September. You wouldn't see me for the rest of the night.

I also used to look forward to my newspaper's local "TV Week" supplement every Sunday.

Yeah. I was a weird kid.

I'm not even familiar with the inside of a TV Guide. Growing up, my parents never subscribed to any magazines and rarely spent money on such things that they deemed frivolous. Instead for me it was the poor man's TV Guide - the free ones included in the Sunday newspaper. I'm assuming they were pretty crummy and barebones compared to TV Guide. That went out the window after we got a set top box with channel guide in the late 90s. By the time I was old enough to take an interest in articles the internet was already at my fingertips. It's a shame because I feel like I missed out on a great part of the past TV culture.

You were not alone Brad. I was the same way with both TV Guide and local TV supplement every week for many many years lol

I always looked forward to "Cheers and Jeers" and the soap opera spotlight pages in The Guide. Since it was no internet or on-screen guides in those days, I looked forward every year for the fall lineups for cable and local TV. It truly was Christmas in September.

Frankly I wonder how long TV Guide will stay in business. I just collect them because I have for the past 29 years. I wish I would have started earlier. I was a senior in HS when I started. Nowadays I mostly just skim through them.

TV Guide was over a long time ago, it hasn't been the same since it became full size.

That being said, your argument for stopping basically means there's no place for any magazines anymore. Obviously you're not going to read breaking news in a magazine because you just can't do that anymore. But I still subscribe to Time and Entertainment Weekly because I like to read summaries and analysis of top news and entertainment stories.

TV Guide was over for me a long time ago because they stopped making it. I still have the very last edition of the Canadian version of TV Guide with listings for the Toronto area. It is dated November 25, 2006. This is what it looks like:

http://thelongestlistofthelongeststuffatthelongestdomainnameatlonglast.com/images4/tvguide.JPG

The magazine has been exclusively online ever since at TV Guide.ca (http://tvguide.ca/home/)

The TV listings are now carried by Zap2It. The site used to have its own listings but the page took too long to load and it took a long time to get through all the channels. I personally like Zap2it better.

I also like their Fall Preview page. Here it is:

That's the problem. The price goes up and the quality goes down. It was just 60 cents a week when I started collecting them.

It's not really their fault, the TV climate has changed. Network TV is not as strong as it used to be, so focusing on the daily grind of TV as it did so elaborately was not needed. People have over 500 channels at a clip at their disposal and DVR's rule all.

Honestly, it's a little weird that it took you this long to realize how irrelevant the guide is. You are always on this forum.

I did recently pick up an old copy for an art collage, and I do remember flipping through them as a kid to see what the scenarios would be on Star Trek, and who was playing on Monday Night Football. I was the night owl of the family, and i would underline the mystery movies 6ABC would play during the middle of the night. The TV Guide was very useful in it's day.

Now, the only magazines I buy are for fashion.

Can't forget that the TV Guide Network is still struggling...

It was put up for sale again early this year, and the ratings are terrible. They've tried to evolve, since their original purpose has become obsolete, but it has not been successful for them.

They seem rather misguided. It's kind of a weird hodge-podge with the re-runs of shows like Early Edition, WTB?, Designing Women, etc. then re-runs of shows like Ugly Betty and Weeds, then those movies and original series. A lot of their reality series do seem terrible. Their schedule is an odd combination.

I may be alone, but honestly, I think it might be wise for a new owner, whenever they come along, to consider re-naming the network and discontinuing the scrolling listings entirely. A lot of people still associate that name with the scrolling programming grid so they may not pay them much attention.
