I was watching some Youtube videos of Skynyrd and the Who and got to thinking how small the lead singers were. Then I watched the Monkees on Antennatv and began to wonder if it was just a coincidence or if most bands had small lead singers. It seems that the groups I noticed the singer was either the shortest member or one of the shortest in the band. Any thoughts as to why that is ?

I think lead frontmen & women are generally shorter due to the fact the amount of jumping and moving around they do on stage. This may not be in all cases, but it seems like it is in most cases.

It could be a coincidence but I can't think of any reason for it. You might be right.

How tall is Roger Daltrey? I always assumed he was regular height.

Wikipedia lists him at 5 " 7 " (I don't know about that) He looks smaller.

Connie Francis is just about 5 feet tall, as is Brenda Lee. Steve Perry (formerly of Journey) is only about 5'7". Karen Carpenter was about 5'4". Bobby Darin was about 5'8 1/2".

Christina Aguilera and Shakira are both 5'1", or so.

The late Steve Marriott, formerly the lead singer and guitarist of The Small Faces and (later) Humble Pie, was maybe 5'4". I think Ronnie James Dio was about the same size as Steve.

Dion is pretty short, too, approx. 5'5". I think it helps him keep away from Runaround Sue. ;)

Peter Frampton is around 5'7", 5'8" (same as the late Andy Gibb), John Oates (of Hall & Oates) is only 5'4", Barbara Mandrell is 5'2", and Madonna is only 5'4".

John Mellencamp isn't tall -- probably 5'6". He looked even shorter when he was photographed with his ex-wife, Elaine Irwin.

Several sites have Sir Mick listed as 5'10".

Prince is a short man. That's probably why he wore heels throughout most of the 80's.

I've seen Prince's height listed as both 5'2" and 5'4", so it's anyone's guess.

I recently saw a fan photo of the members of ZZ Top, posing together. They're all shorter than average -- maybe 5' 5", 5' 7", and 5' 9" -- Dusty, Frank, and Billy, in order.
