View Full Version : Janet's Jealousy
PrettyinPink55 10-18-2012, 08:43 PM Did it seem to you that at times Janet would act more jealous of Jack's girlfriends than would a normal "platonic" friend?
I remember watching as a child and thinking that maybe Janet and Jack were dating or had dated in the past. It always seemed like she had a stake in Jack's love life. Anyone else think so, or was that just me?
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 10-18-2012, 11:54 PM Janet was given the unfortunate role of being the ring leader in the series. I don't think she was intentionally written as jealous but rather as the person who wouldn't tolerate any crap from Jack. The issue was never supposed to be that Jack was going out on a date, it was that he was going on a date and behaving some sort of way. For example, acting like a jerk and giving attention to the pretty girl in the cooking class rather than teach the class as a whole (of course we find out it's because it's Dean Travers' niece (I think)). So that's what her deal was supposed to be. Of course in our society, if a woman has any problem with another woman or with a guy and another woman, people automatically just say it's because she's jealous. And to that I say, um, yawn.
HOWEVAH, that being said, it's fun to watch it that way if you're a fan of any Jack and Janet pairing. Which I am.
Lyverbe 10-20-2012, 08:41 AM She was being more protective than jealous. If my daughter starts dating someone that I don't think is right, I'll try to warn her of the potential problems because, as the saying goes, love is blind.
In this case, my negative comments could be seen as jealousy when they are not.

She was definitely jealousy when she thought Jack was interested in Terri when she first moved in. I guess it made her feel less attractive.
TwinBrother 10-20-2012, 04:11 PM There was a little jealousy there. Not only because of Jack's girlfriends, but because of the freedom and carelessness Jack experienced.
PrettyinPink55 10-21-2012, 12:26 AM There was a little jealousy there. Not only because of Jack's girlfriends, but because of the freedom and carelessness Jack experienced.
That may be a better way of putting it. She wasn't so much jealous of the women as jealous and critical of Jack's behavior and attitude toward women. I think all of you have said it perfectly. When I was a kid watching this show, it came off as jealousy to me because I was so young and didn't understand all the depths relationships come with. I would always think, "why does Janet care so much about Jack's relationships?"
But I think maybe it does come from a protective/"I expect more from you" place.
Solomon had a good point though about Janet being bothered by Jack's interest in Terri. But I think you saw it more with Jack and Chrissy in the early seasons. Maybe because they were still getting to know each other and establishing that trust, but it seemed like Jack's attraction and interest in Chrissy bothered Janet more. It also may have made her feel less attractive. She was more tomboyish and less confident in the beginning. But then again, Chrissy was also smarter in the beginning!!

I think it's more of they'd be breaking house rules if one had an affair with another!

She did show some feelings for Jack.

I always thought Jack and Janet would have been a great couple.

Me too and so did a majority of TC fans!
PrettyinPink55 10-21-2012, 04:58 PM I think it would've been nice to have seen them end up together after all those years. Anything but having him end up with Vicki!! She was just thrown into our faces!! So was Phillip for that matter...

Ughhh. Like I hate to think of Jack ending up with anyone but Janet, but I can at least picture kind of like, I don't know, someone more fun. I think I read in the book? or somewhere...there was a woman who guest starred on TAC and the actress had actually tried out for the role of Vicky...and just looking at her I remember thinking she fit way better. I'll have to look that up sometime.
Just ugh. The casting. You don't just throw characters that we love that much with the most boring, random people possible.
Edit: It may have been Gail Edwards? Now I have no clue where I read this and it's going to bug me haha.

Actually I was talking about Jack's general carefree attitude, behavior Janet had trouble exhibiting. Jack was lucky and fun and Janet was reserved and responsible.

You're right, she was. An image she tried to shed in the episode "Good Old Reliable Janet."
And remember when all three roommates went to Dr. Prescott after arguing over how they each decided to spend their winnings from the race? Chrissy and Jack complained that Janet was always so perfect and she criticized everyone!!!!

I didn't think Jack had very much chemistry with Vicki.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-23-2012, 04:53 PM I didn't think Jack had very much chemistry with Vicki.
It's not just that but Vicky was a foreign character to show while Janet had been there 8 years so she should've been with Jack on TAC!

I agree!
Big3sCompanyFan 10-23-2012, 08:37 PM I agree!
So do most TC fans like E! True Hollywood story said!
PrettyinPink55 10-24-2012, 12:10 AM I wonder if they ever considered pairing the two. Except for "Mate for Each Other," they didn't really explore it.

I saw an interview with Joyce once where she said she would've taken the Vicki role if offered. It would've been a huge payday so there's no way she'd turn it down!

I'm not sure, but one of the producers admitted they should have.

TwinBrother 10-25-2012, 12:48 PM ^Yes, I was gonna say it was Bernie West. He was the last one to die of the three producers, having died in 2010.
And it makes me think of something. When Suzanne went through her contract dispute in the fall of 1980, producer Don Nicholl had just died the previous summer. I wonder if that had an effect on the negotiations--the fact that West and Ross were still mourning the loss of their partner, etc. and didn't want to tolerate Suzanne's shenanigans.

Suzanne was such an ass about it that she even admitted she would've handled it differently if she could do it over.

Yes I agree. It's amazing how many TC fans feel this way.
PrettyinPink55 10-25-2012, 08:59 PM Perhaps they were trying to dispel the myth that a man and woman can't live together without any romantic involvement?

I think that's a lot of it. At least, that's what the show was initially supposed to be about. And that's a good message to have.
But at the same time, sometimes a show takes a life of its own. The chemistry between Jack and Janet was so astounding that it was a bummer to see it go nowhere. Not even a little acknowledgement. I think it left a lot of fans in the dust.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU GUYS! Jack and Janet should've had a show together instead of that dork Vicki!
Jack Tripper's shenanigans alone could've made the show last 2 to 3 years which is 2 to 3 times longer than TAC lasted!
TwinBrother 10-26-2012, 10:37 AM Yep, a series with Jack and Janet would have been short lived but it would have lasted longer than TAC.

You are so right.
I can't watch the last few episodes of the series because I like to pretend they don't exist!!!

Ugh it is so painful and both of the relationships feel so forced.
I mean...I don't necessarily suggest to work Jack and Janet into a spin-off like some do because I almost feel like it would've been overkill...but maybe devote the last few episodes and leave it at that?
And also, you know, not leave Terri out.

In the spinoff with Jack and Janet Terri, Larry, Furley, & Felipe could've all guest starred but then it wouldn't have been a spinoff!
TwinBrother 10-27-2012, 10:35 AM I think in a spinoff with Jack and Janet you would probably have to include Larry, but you could leave out the rest.

Felipe was very funny and should've been used more!

I agree. What a hilarious character Felipe was!
PrettyinPink55 10-28-2012, 12:15 AM Felipe was flippin' awesome!!! I wish he'd been given a job at Jack's Bistro!!!
TwinBrother 10-28-2012, 12:55 AM What's amazing about Felipe is that he was only on 6 episodes! I couldn't believe this when I read it.
Boy, the producers were constantly getting rid of good actors on that show...Lana, Felipe, Cindy Snow, The Ropers, etc.

I wasn't a big Lana fan, but she could've stuck around longer. She kind of got the short end of the stick when it came to plot lines.
What I thought was great about the actor who played Felipe, Gino Conforti, was that he wasn't really Hispanic!!! He was Italian!!! I would never have known had I not looked at his name!!!

Yes, he didn't speak a lick of Spanish yet he was approached all the time on the street by people speaking Spanish to him.

Choo crazy? Choo kidding?
Felipe should've been on his own show or given a regular role in TAC!

You could tell Felipe didn't know Spanish in the episode with his hot cousin staying at the apartment where they spoke Spanish but Felipe never did!

I think it's in some tv documentaries. It's also on page 204 of 'Come And Knock On Our Door'.
Felipe's character was supposed to have been able to speak Spanish eventhough Gino didn't speak it.

Gino guest starred on The Jeffersons as the head of a dating service when Florence was looking for a date. Gino had no accent whatsoever!

A FRENCH bird.
TwinBrother 10-29-2012, 11:20 AM ^It must be Felipe!
Imdb says Gino was only on 6 episodes of TC, but in actuality he was on an episode in the 5th season called "The Not So Great Imposter" when Jack pretends to be a famous chef named David Miller to get a job. It's one of the funnier episodes when Jack is flipped over into a somersault by a girl and Felipe says "Olay!".
PrettyinPink55 10-29-2012, 10:28 PM I guess I never noticed that Felipe didn't speak Spanish in any of the episodes aside from the occasional phrase here and there.
WOW!!! Gino is really versatile and talented!!!
I REALLY wish they would've done more episodes with him, because I loved the way his character played off of Jack!!! I really think he should've been given a job at Jack's Bistro!! That would've been a great way of using his character more!!

God knows why they did that but in fairness to EZ he wasn't that bad however Felipe was a lot funnier!

I must have. I don't remember it too well, obviously.
Btw, speaking of Janet's jealousy, I've been watching some more episodes since this discussion and I agree that Janet was jealous of Jack and his girlfriends. It was not obvious because Janet suppressed her feelings for Jack.

A big part of it was also the type of person she was. It didn't seem like Jack's dating or romantic life bothered the other female roommates the same way it did Janet.

Just got done watching 'A Black Letter Day' from season 4. The plot is that Lana finds a question in Dear Abby where a man named 'Cookie' admits to having an affair with one of his female roommates. When Lana asks Janet if it is her(which we know it is not), she acts very shy and vulnerable(even though she was saying no) and almost guilty as if the thought of having an affair with Jack might appeal to her or possibly she thought about it before. When Lana asks Chrissy if she is the one having with Jack, she flat out says no, doesn't even flinch. I know these are only characters on a sitcom, but I am realizing that Janet might have had more feelings for Jack than I thought.
