October 18, 2012 10:59 AM PDT Monkey Flee: NBC Puts Animal Practice to Sleep, Replaces With Whitney

Crystal the monkey is out of a job. NBC has cancelled struggling freshman sitcom Animal Practice. Filling the Wednesday at 8/7 void beginning Nov. 14 will be Whitney. Though Practice initially benefitted from a strong Olympics lead-in, the Justin Kirk-starring veterinarian comedy consistently pulled low numbers, this week mustering just 3.8 mil and a 1.0. The show’s Wednesday companion, fellow rookie comedy Guys With Kids, appears safe for the moment. Whitney was originally scheduled to premiere this Friday along with Community, but NBC announced last week it was keeping both shows in its “back pocket [in case] we need to make any schedule changes” earlier in the week. Practice, which will air its last episode on Nov. 7, is this season’s second cancellation (following the demise of CBS’ Made in Jersey.)

That sucks because I liked it too. I was hoping that NBC would give it a chance. NBC is usually the network of low rated programming anyway, which is ironic because I like NBC the best of the broadcast networks.

The show was not out loud funny, which I think doomed the show. I liked the stories and the characters and actors in general. Usually it told a good story, and the monkey was the comedy relief. I loved Crystal the monkey as Rizzo. I liked the episode where she (or oddly he in the show) made a painting, that the homely groomer wanted to sell (and did, but bought back at a loss) to a rich woman. Poor Rizzo knew what was up and was furiously jumping up and down so not to lose its painting. I also liked the cold open two weeks ago with Dr. Coleman and Rizzo waking up together, getting washed and dressed and going to the office.

There has never been (to my knowledge) a show that lasted that took place in a veternary hospital, so this was unique. I am sad though because this is a show that I think had a lot of potential. Cheers was dead last literally in the ratings, so was All In the Family its first year. Now because of the internet and that anyone is a critic, the show was just doomed from the start. Again, the show was not a gut buster, but it wasn't crap either.

Personally, I think the writers and the writing sucked. It's like having a football team with talent, but the coaches are dunderheads and don't know how to use what they have. I think this show would have been a lot better if they had better writing and if it was a "mockumentary" like The Office and Parks and Recreation, but NBC is tired of this format (and when Parks gets cancelled, I will be really sad.). I think this show could have been better as a dramedy type animal medical show with a caustic lead, demanding wealthy NYC customers, with a quirky staff providing the drama (and making the Asian male character less of a wuss geek) with the silly comedy of Yamana getting hit in the eye with the fooseball.

I live overseas so I watch my content via a website that posts the shows after they have been aired. On Thursdays (Wednesday night), I watched Animal Practice, then The Middle and Modern Family. One less thing to watch on Thursdays.:( :( :( :( .

The last episode they just shown had Annie Potts, who was the cutest Designing Woman! Networks, find a show for this old gal!

Long live Dr. Yamazing!

It's much MUCH funnier than Whitney IMO.

It's good to have an animal show as long as they treat the animals well which I'm sure they do.

There are 3 episodes left so I will check them out!

I hate to say this folks even though that I have never watch the show on NBC and i might be a little teeny tiny bit biased here with this confession but the title and look from it's poster alone screams "Children's Hospital"clone and "Adult Swim" heck the show should have been on "Adult Swim" instead of "NBC" anyway but that's just my opinon on it.

and it case if you don't know which poster i'm talking about then take a look at this beauty right here:http://images.wikia.com/entertainment1/images/0/0c/Animal_Practice.jpg
