View Full Version : Has the traffic on this site gone down??
Big3sCompanyFan 10-13-2012, 08:00 PM It just seems like I don't see as many new posts as I did 5+ years ago.
I know about facebook but I'm not on facebarf so I hope you guys see I'm doing my part to help the site!
rcbrad 10-13-2012, 08:16 PM It could be. It seems too, that there are more posts than there used to be that do not have anything to do with sitcoms.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-13-2012, 08:46 PM It could be. It seems too, that there are more posts than there used to be that do not have anything to do with sitcoms.
Oh you mean in the Chit Chat section?
But even those posts seem to be down from a few years ago.
Zoneboy 10-13-2012, 08:57 PM Could be because some of our regular posters haven't been around lately and this happens from time to time. Some will leave for whatever reason and later come back and some will unfortunately decide to stay gone.
I haven't had much time to participate much on here lately, unfortunately, but I still read the Blog and posts frequently. Things do seem a lot slower than 5 or 6 years ago, at least they do to me.
I hate the show boards aren't busier.

Are you thinking of someone in particular?

No, not any one particular person.

I think this board will implode if TVFactFan decides to leave!
He has like over 70K posts and has to be the #1 poster or right up there!

A lot of long time members have left. That's why the boards have been slow.

Is it that dumbass facebook? I'm not a member there and wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole!

There are quite a number of folks I'm friends with on Facebook who used to post regularly here and no longer do. I can't speak for them as to what their reasons are for not posting regularly over here anymore. I am active at both sites so I know one doesn't necessarily have to choose between the two.
loaferman 10-15-2012, 02:37 PM Oh, the irony.

He also posted alot on the Happy Days board and also there used to be a Happy Days Chit Chat Board too.
Steve_uk 10-16-2012, 08:38 AM Personally speaking the traffic is down because people are not allowed to post links to programmes and so it's hard to get the raw material for serious discussion. For example I joined the site to discuss Unsolved Mysteries which was showing on British television at the time but when the series ended I couldn't access information to allow me to participate in discussion.
If that makes sense..

You're not the only one. Traffic needs to come back.
Zoneboy 10-19-2012, 10:43 PM Personally speaking the traffic is down because people are not allowed to post links to programmes.
Not being able to post links to programs has very little (if anything) to do with the site's traffic.
Fuffer 10-19-2012, 10:46 PM I joined just yesterday and I think the site traffic is just fine.
Big3sCompanyFan 10-20-2012, 07:52 AM Not being able to post links to programs has very little (if anything) to do with the site's traffic.
I agree. Most sitcoms on here aren't making new shows anymore so there is no point in going to the show's site IF they even have one!
Mr. Television 10-20-2012, 08:52 AM I joined just yesterday and I think the site traffic is just fine.
Welcome to Sitcoms Online.
TVFactFan 10-20-2012, 11:24 AM I joined just yesterday and I think the site traffic is just fine.
Welcome to the Boards. The question was in regards to how the traffic used to be before Facebook became popular which was around 2009.
So you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference since you just joined the site. What are some of your favorite shows?
Fuffer 10-20-2012, 01:09 PM Thanks for the welcomes. I like a lot of the classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's like Leave it to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, Dobie Gillies, The Brady Bunch and many more.

TVFactFan 10-20-2012, 02:29 PM I like Welcome Back Kotter.
Unfortunately that board has no traffic because it's not airing anywhere on cable and only has one season on DVD
Fuffer 10-20-2012, 02:35 PM That sucks. I wonder when they will come out with the other DVD's to the series?
TVFactFan 10-20-2012, 02:40 PM That sucks. I wonder when they will come out with the other DVD's to the series?
I;m guessing the 1st season didn't sell too well because it wasn't on cable
Fuffer 10-20-2012, 02:43 PM I wish they had a cable station that had all these 50's, 60's & 70's sitcoms. TV Land has mostly moved away from that format with exception to there morning lineup with Leave It To Beaver and Dick Van Dyke.

We don't need a cable station like that anymore with the emergence of digital TV channels like Antenna TV and Me-TV that both air shows from the 50's, 60's, and 70's
Our overall traffic to the site, blog, photo galleries, etc. isn't down. It's really only the amount of posts that is down.
September was one of our slowest months in recent years. We lost a few high activity members in recent months, so I think that was a factor. It's hard to replace those people who post on every board. The amount of monthly posts has been pretty consistent the last few years. We did lose quite a few after 2009 or so. Facebook definitely impacted a lot of boards, not just ours. I think most of the posts we lost were from the Chit Chat and the Random board especially.
Our daily active users has gone down from 400-600 in 2005-2008 to under 300 now. For having only 300 daily active members we have quite a few posts.

The only thing I hated during my time on this site is when TJ would interfere in our battles with the guys on the tape trading board. Remember me, you, janice and Brian would go at it with Lamont, and 3 other people
LMAO. Those were the days

Unfortunately I don't think it's anything that can be done because of the ongoing emergence of social media. Social media is what caused the TV Land boards to shut down.
Mr. Television 10-20-2012, 06:08 PM Unfortunately I don't think it's anything that can be done because of the ongoing emergence of social media. Social media is what caused the TV Land boards to shut down.
The reason I like these boards is because it's still one of the best sites to get your tv news and to talk with fans about the shows. FB is good for regular Chit Chat and sports talk.
USATVFAN 10-20-2012, 06:27 PM Yes I have notice that traffic(New posts) on sitcomsonline is slower then a few years ago when I joined this site but it not really drastic it just gone down a bet. It does seem like there is always a uptick in new post and active members during the Summer Months but then it goes down in the fall months. It always seem busier in the Summer for some reason.
Years ago there use to be a Great Website(Message board) for Talk Shows called WWW.TVTalkShows.com, (http://about.me/tvtalkshows) around 2002-2005 It was always busy on there. It was a great Site to talk about Talk shows and It would have over 500 new posts and active members on a daily basic in it prime and The Web Site had to shut down in 2010 because of extremely low traffics and very few active members mostly do to Facebook and Twitter. A lot of those peoples who use to talk on the Live with Regis and Kelly Message board or the view Message Board were now talking on the Facebook pages instead. Social Media definitely had a effect on it and that is one of the reason I think TV Land Board had to shut down as well and also do o the fact they never show classic shows anymore.
Even Some Message Boards on both IMDB.com and TV.Com that I visit regularly both seem to have slower traffic(Postings, Active Members) then it use too as well. although I admit I don't visit TV.Com anymore like I use too except to look at Episodes guide. I remember the friends IMDB page use to have 50 new posts on there a day just 4 or 5 years ago but now it usually only has 10 new posts a day.
Like I said I think social Maida affected it in a big way and also some peoples just may have gotten rid of their computers to save money. But that is not same in my opinion.

I see that I have been chatting the same way on FB the way I do on here which makes some of the people on my friends list judge me. So today I put in my FB status........"I like Roseanne a little more than the Cosby Show" and a guy on my FB list says........"You watch way too much TV"
So I decided to delete him because I don't want no one telling me that's I;m doing something too much. So I will just save the TV Talk for here and the sports talk for FB

Well this site is still in my Top 5 but not number anymore like it was in 2005 but still my 2nd favorite site.
I could tell the site was no longer my number 1 site when I was suspended last year and wasn't that bothered by it like I used to be in 2005 LOL

TVFactFan 10-20-2012, 06:50 PM LOL..I never even knew there was a TV Land board!
Yeah they used to have a message board for all of the shows that were on their schedule and some that wasn't on the schedule. Then they also had another board called "Ask the TVLand Link" who was a guy that answered any questions about new programming, schedules, or ratings.
The TV Land Link board was the only active board:lol:

I am the exact same way. On f/b I refrain from the TV talk too for fear of people being put off by it. This is a great place to talk to fellow TV addicts and to unleash my inner TV nerd!!

yankeesrj12 10-21-2012, 06:04 PM I think the lack of quality sitcoms this season could be a reason for the huge September drop. Most seasons there seems to be a bit of an increase in the month, but not this year. If there are a lot of high profile sitcoms next season (like Michael J. Fox's comedy) I think you could see some big bumps. Until then, it'll probably remain slower than it used to be back in the day.
Remember, those 6,000 posts in October could still increase. We have ten days left in the month.

But even the popular shows like Big Bang Theory has a inactive board.

What's the #1 sitcom on TV now? Are they getting posts?
TVFactFan 10-21-2012, 08:59 PM What's the #1 sitcom on TV now? Are they getting posts?
Big Bang Theory is the top comedy on TV and no one post on the board.
Retro4Life 10-21-2012, 09:28 PM There are other factors that might contribute to the boards being more quiet. Yes, the exodus to FB is probably partially (and regrettably) responsible, but economic concerns may weigh in as well. It is now common to need two or more jobs to make ends meet, or at least overtime in your main job. That leaves less time for leisure pursuits, including message boards. Also, many people may be closing their internet accounts because in these difficult times, they just can't afford them. I love message boards and the 'net as much as the next guy, but if it ever comes between them and eating, I gotta eat!

I love message boards and the 'net as much as the next guy, but if it ever comes between them and eating, I gotta eat!
I really hope that is not the case because that sounds depressing. Everyone needs an escape from reality once and a while and that's what this site is good for.
Just like me right now, I have no job and still applying everyday and in the evening i come here to take my off of it because if not i would be depressed. And closing a internet account is not possible for a unemployed person because that's the only way you get to apply to jobs
Big3sCompanyFan 10-21-2012, 09:40 PM There are other factors that might contribute to the boards being more quiet. Yes, the exodus to FB is probably partially (and regrettably) responsible, but economic concerns may weigh in as well. Not true! Internet subscription is at an all time high! Whether it's via computer or smartphone most everyone uses the internet!
This stuff about how bad the economy is overblown! Many states have unemployment around 7% or lower! We're not Somalia!

All of those things can be done without the internet, except maybe the last and that's not a necessity. Even that could be done in a bar, or at a buddy's house, etc.
Yes, it is much easier to look for work with the net, but there's also just pounding the pavement, using the newspaper, etc. And those alternatives don't require a monthly internet subscription fee, which unless you're living on Mars, isn't that cheap.

Hardly.
yankeesrj12 10-22-2012, 02:28 PM But even the popular shows like Big Bang Theory has a inactive board.
I was intending to mean for the entire site, not just specific boards. If there are a ton of highly anticipated sitcoms, I think traffic as whole a goes up.

Ant-Lox 10-27-2012, 02:30 PM It is honestly the only reliable site on the internet for me. I leave for a year or two, and It's still the same cool discussions.
Some shows don't have a big fan base, and those forums seem to look like graveyards, that's the only downside. It's funny to respond to a post, and see that the thread was started 3 years ago.

Yeah I love the forum to! Its nice being able to chat with other people about your favorite tv shows. It's also nice because you get to hear each other's opinions. And honestly, this is the only site I can rely on to just talk about sitcoms.
And about the slow traffic; as of November 2015, there seems to be a lot of traffic on the forum, mainly the chit chat and general sitcom discussion forum. The least busiest forums are the sub- forum tv shows. They don't seem to get much traffic at all.

Maybe because there is a lot more to talk about when discussing anything that comes to mind and general questions about TV shows. When you are on a message board about a certain show, if it's not on cable or digital tv it won't be much to talk about.
Dude111 11-19-2015, 11:40 AM I hope it doesnt go down Solomon!! (The activity here)
This site is on GOOD vbb software! (3.x) -- I have lost alot of good VBB sites to garbage the last 2 years and its sad!!!!
They either goto vb4 or 5 or goto Xenforo.... Both of which are crap compared to this....... Now Xenforo IS NOT THAT BAD,not as all as bad as Vb4 or 5.. I am on maybe 5 or 6 Xenforo sites...... But Im only on 1 VB4 site and thats only because the admin REWROTE EVERYTHING to make it look as much like 3.8.6 as he could! (And it IS 99% the same)
www.paklinks.com/gs
It IS slower but its acceptable.... But for the rule any site Im on that goes to that garbage I leave.... (VB4 or 5) I will not support crap.....

It's because of social media
This used to be the 1st site I came to when I arrived home from work which was during the GOOD YEARS..........2002 to 2007

I think threads have always been mostly started by active members. The problem is a ton of active members have left over the years leaving only a few remaining. I can think of maybe only 100 members that actively post on the boards these days.
I frequently look through old threads and it's really amazing how much this place has changed. It seems in the 2000s SO was a really wild and swinging place but today there's just not much activity. I have no plans of leaving, but I wish the message boards would see a renaissance sometime in the future.
And like Solomon said the site now has tremendous competition from social media, Facebook, etc. But IMO this is still and will always be the best place to discuss sitcoms.

social media took the fun out of tv message boards
youtube took the fun out of tape trading for old tv shows and sports

Back in the early 2000's this place was really rocking. I used to come on here at 11 at night and post in the Random Board till 2am. Now that board is dead. Many of the old time members have left. It's sad but this website at least is still active. A lot of other websites have died.

All kidding aside, I can see why people loathe social media. It's seldom worth it to get a social media account.
Regulus 01-17-2017, 11:26 PM It's not just on this site. It's gotten "quiet" on a lot of forums. Time and again I'll go to a website in the morning and there will be NOBODY posting anything in the last 12 or even 24 hours! :(
Nurse Sully 01-17-2017, 11:44 PM I don't like Social Media sites at all and unfortunately that does seem the way boards are going. I am still staying away because of all the other crap I believe is involved in Social Media sites. I just joined this forum today and it may not be someone responding every minute to my posts, but it does seem active enough for me. I work as a Full Time Nurse and get 36 hours per week working 3 days a week 12 hours a day. That gives me 4 days off a week which is a big chunk of free time. This will be right up my alley to go along with watching sitcoms.

You bring some interesting posts and thoughts to the board, but it would be more effective if you maintained one account/screen name/identity. I'm pretty sure this is against the rules.

If I'm wrong I'll be the first to admit it but to me this has gotten too obvious to be ignored. For a few months now there have been these new members who show up, participate extensively for about two days, then vanish from the site forever. Their most recent username before this was Tar Tar Binks. If you look through the posts the writing is very similar, as are the signatures.
Whoever they are, they're not starting trouble or anything, but they are deceiving people. Again, if this is just some massive coincidence then I apologize.

I also noticed that the photo on her profile is gone now which is another common thing w/ this person. She would always put up pics of attractive women on her profile and then take them down shortly after.
Something's up...
biffbronson 01-18-2017, 08:31 PM There's a simple reason my participation in the "traffic" came to a halt several months ago:
When I got my new computer, I couldn't recall my password to go back on the site. I tried the password retrieval process MANY times, but S.O. never sent me an email!! I guess I could have tried other means, but hindsight is 20/20. Finally now I've located where I'd written down the password, long ago.
I'm SO glad to be back here! :) I'll tell you, I've missed ALL of you! And I promise to try not to be bullheaded, unless you want me to. This is a great day for me! Thanks for having me.

PhoenixAcres you are SO RIGHT!!!;) I have known this for a long time! The mods know it as well. This person was even called out on it before a while back!. They went away for a while and than periodically came back ! Both your posts ,this one and your other one on this thread about this are 100 percent on the money!;)
Not sure either why they do it? Like you say they don't cause any trouble. But it is just strange to be starting new accounts as totally different people! Also they tend to post personal pictures (kind of look photo shopped to me ) ? on their profile page ! All different young girls. Which is a bit scary, wondering who this person really is and where they are getting all these girl's pictures who obviously aren't them?
Bonniegirl 01-21-2017, 11:18 PM I also noticed that the photo on her profile is gone now which is another common thing w/ this person. She would always put up pics of attractive women on her profile and then take them down shortly after.

Yep! JamesG I didn't see your post when I just responded to Phoenix acres. But yes, I should have added that too.The pics get taken down after they stop posting! ;)
PhoenixAcres 01-22-2017, 12:27 PM Thanks JamesG and Bonnie for backing me up on this!
I just knew there was something unnatural and phony about these new members. In one day alone they'd have 50 posts, an avatar, a signature, and a profile. In a few days' time, they'd be gone. I'm actually surprised I didn't notice this sooner. I did a little research using the Members List looking for the same pattern and I found maybe 6 more accounts just like this that they'd made during 2016.
I don't know what their goal is. Maybe they're doing a social experiment or they're just a professional troll or having an identity crisis. Whatever the case maybe they'll stop now that they've been exposed. I was getting tired of them deceiving real members into thinking we were getting new members to the site.
LooksLikeCRicci 01-24-2017, 01:37 PM To get back to the original question: I don't know how much traffic has changed, since I haven't been here that long. From what I see in the archives, it seems like there used to be a lot more discussion of specific shows and comparisons of shows. Once you boil off all the chit chat and games and lists of favorites and least favorites, it seems like there's hardly anything actually discussing programs. Ironically, it seems like Unsolved Mysteries folks are the big exceptions in that regard - they seems to have a lot of information about their subjects.
I've observed the UM boards to be quite a bit busier these days. I think the fact that Amazon now has the first season ROBERT STACK episodes is bringing in some traffic. I love it!

Dunkin Donuts 05-16-2017, 01:06 AM It does seem like it has gone down to me. I think facebook/twitter has had something to do with it. Plus, who knows how many folks have bought new computers, all that and forgotten passwords. Heck I wonder how many have passed away.

I had a similar problem. I couldn't remember my password, tried to get an automatic email to have it reset - tried that about 3 times with no success. I think I even sent a request for help that never got answered. I eventually gave up and just created a new profile, and I had to start from scratch.
Crusinforabrusin2.5 06-16-2020, 05:21 PM Social Media is just way more convenient for people than an obscure forum is. Facebook also has Classic tv groups which you can join too.
- A lot of long time members have either been gone for a long time now OR Don't post as much as they use to. This could be due to many things such as College, Forgetting your password and not coming back, or simply burnout from Classic tv.
- Sitcomsonline is a forum that caters to a specific niche. There's only so much you can discuss about classic tv before it gets old and repetitive. I love Class television but I do get burned out from talking about it, which is why I haven't been around lately.
