BILOXI — Actor Gary Collins died overnight in Biloxi, officials said.

Collins, 74, was brought to Biloxi Regional Medical Center where he died shortly before 1 a.m., Harrison County Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer said.

Switzer said Collins died of natural causes.

Collins' next of kin is listed as Mary Ann Mobley, a former Miss America from Brandon.

Collins is known from his TV show-host work with "Hour Magazine" and as host of the Miss America pagent, both in the 1980s. He starred in the TV series "The Sixth Sense" in the 1970s and "The Wackiest Ship in the Army" in the '60s. He guest-starred in movies including "Airport" and "Angel in My Pocket."

Collins made South Mississippi news in January of 2011 when he was arrested after walking out of Jazzeppi's restaurant in Biloxi without paying his bill.

Reports show Collins paid a $500 fine two weeks after the incident and did not appear in court.

Rotten news, but not totally unexpected, given his obvious issues of late.

I'm probably one of the few here that actually watched "The Sixth Sense" when it originally aired (hey, I was about eight, but I remember it). I always liked Collins and Mobley, too, and thought they symbolized good but family friendly entertainment in the 70's.

I don't remember The Sixth Sense but I do remember watching another one of his short lived TV Shows, Born Free.

R.I.P. Gary Collins. :(

I just received a PM asking me if this was a true obit or another hoax? Sad to say that it is true with practically all the major news sources reporting it.

I don't know, he had a few run-in's with the law including at least 2 convictions for drunk driving and for walking out of a restaurant and not paying his bill but certainly nothing that would indicate he was living on borrowed time. If he had committed suicide then I could see it but not death by natural causes.

Wow! This is so sad to hear. He and his wife Mary Anne were on the verge of divorce, weren't they?

Well, this may be a case of hindsight being 20/20, and I know that mugshots are typically terrible pictures, but the one I saw of him from last year or so really indicated some poor health to me.

Whatever the case, I'm very sorry that he went through what he did, and certainly that he passed away.

:rip: Gary...I'm sorry that he had to deal with so many demons toward the end of his life. My heart and prayers go out to Mary Ann and their daughter, Clancy.
