I re-watched the pilot of Cheers today in honour of its 30th anniversary (can you believe that?), and it's just as good as ever! Especially the conversation about sweaty movies! :D

I haven't yet but I will in about 90 minutes.

One of the nice things about Cheers is how timeless it is. The GQ article touched on the fact that there are only a handful of references to the pop culture and current events of the day in the entire eleven-year run of the series. The most dated thing in the show is the technology.

People will still be watching Cheers in 50 years, relating to the characters and laughing at the jokes.

I watched it Sunday night. I also watched it first run on a Thursday night 30 years ago, as a 16 year old. It is still a better show than any sitcom out there today, and the only show that was close was Mary Tyler Moore. I wish I had time to rewatch the entire series, but nowadays I only pull out a DVD to watch an occasional episode very rarely.

This re-viewing was a DVD on a blu-ray player, and on a 40-inch Hi-Def screen. For the first time, I noticed a piece of the boom mike getting into the shot.

I love that there's renewed interest in the show with the thirtieth anniversary. I'm not holding my breath, but maybe we'll get a Blu-ray release out of the deal. It'd give them a chance to get it right. It's criminal that there are so many edited episodes in the later seasons on DVD--especially the series finale. There's no good reason why we don't have it uncut on DVD.

I watched the entire series, episode by episode, on Netflix. It was a long process, but I did it. And it's so awesome that Cheers is still a great show after 30 years.

Ah, didn't even know that September 30th was the 30th anniversary but that would have been a cool idea! I just got Season 1 so I don't remember much about the pilot but it should be fun to watch anyway!
