Hello,

I am trying to find the name of an English-speaking, probably American sitcom I watched in the nineties. It was about a young woman who is an alcoholic. She causes a car accident and the judge forces her to go into rehab. She meets a guy who is also an alcoholic and they develop an affair.

The woman's mother is a sexually-depraved woman who is having an affair with a young Latino man who is hoping to get a green card.

It was one of those sitcoms with no audio laugh track. I think it was unsuccessful and may have lasted for only one season.
Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about?

Thanks,
X

it sounds a little like Brett Butler's Grace Under Fire - but not quite

it kinda reminds me of Dear John a little, but they weren't alcoholics, they were just divorcees...

was this early or late nineties, or can you remember anything else distinctive about the show?

It's definitely not Grace Under Fire.

All I can remember is that the guy told the woman (or her mother) that he can't sleep with her until some step in the program, because until then it may jeopardize their sobriety, or something like that. He told her that once they reach that step, he'll ***k her so hard she'll be in a wheelchair. Then, her depraved mother bought her a wheelchair as a gift.

The only other thing I remember is that for some reason I thought the show was called The Morning After, but I couldn't find anything with that name in many Google searches. I don't know when in the nineties it was.

Thanks for you help.

Not sure if this article helps any, hope it does http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/03/the-history-of-alcoholism-on-tv-from-comedy-to-empathy/254750/

Maybe The John Larroquette Show?

Thanks for the link.
The show I'm talking about was far less famous than the John Larroquette Show, and not nearly well-known enough to be included in that link.

Based on the language, it was probably a cable show, most likely on HBO or Showtime (if it was, in fact, American; it could have been Canadian).

sounds a little like My Name is Earl, but that was recent, that's all I can think of.

Good point, now that I think about it it does seem like the kind of show HBO would produce. Thanks!

There it is: Rude Awakening!
I looked at a list of past HBO shows and found nothing. Then I looked at the Showtime list, and there it was.

Thanks a lot, Brad. That was a good pointer.

No problem. The fact that were virtually no single-camera sitcoms on broadcast television until Malcolm in the Middle (2000) also brought me to that conclusion.

Glad I could help!
