Sadly, it was ten years ago this month when the final original episodes of UM were telecast. The last one was the segment on Miranda Gaddis and Ashley Pond, the two Oregon girls who disappeared eight weeks apart in early 2002. That segment originally aired on September 20, 2002. And of course, Robert Stack died of heart failure eight months later, on May 14, 2003. :(

Neeless to say, it's hard to believe that a full decade has past since we last saw any new episodes of UM.

Very sad indeed. I don't understand why they couldn't produce new clips and simply make their own Youtube channel and air them via the internet. I'd imagine it would be cheaper than refilming Dennis Farina and paying him to reread Stack's narrations verbatim. They could even take some of the older unsolved segments, and refilm interviews with their loved ones and those pertinet to the cases and do updated versions on older segments. I'd take that over no UM.

Yeah, they could do that but there's a plethora of cable channels so they could find some network to air new shows on AND do a youtube channel!

I'm sure Lifetime or Spike would take new episodes. If it doesn't work out then move to only youtube but it would certainly help and be nice if they had new shows somewhere on TV!

I don't understand why they can't just make a YouTube channel and upload every Unsolved Mysteries episode (the original ones). It is cheaper and I think subscriptions = $$$ if they done that. I can't believe 10 years have come and gone since the last new original episode aired. I can remember watching the last one about Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis, along with the others like Janice & Alyssa Owen and Diane Shawcroft & Jennifer Lueth. I feel old and I'm only 22.

Kane, you seem to be a smart and influential guy. Have you tried contacting UM and prodding them to get off their lazy butts and make new shows?

No. I could contact them about making new episodes, but it wouldn't do any good because, even if they wanted to make new episodes, the UM crew has no say on whether the show goes back in production. Only a network - or a syndicator - can make that call.

Then can't you get a network or syndicator to show some interest? Just take one flip of your TV's channels and you'll see some incredibly stupid shows. Not only that but we have well over a 100 channels so there must be room for UM somewhere!!

In fact my cable provider recently increased their channel capacity to over 1000!

There may be lots of channels, but unfortunately getting a television executive to show even a little interest in any given TV program is never easy. It can take a lot of time and effort to sway a network, but it's a good bet that some networks won't touch UM with a ten-foot pole. And that's because they are either clueless about the show, or have an elitist attitude against it.

I might be in the minority, but I think that if UM ever comes back as a first-run series, it should be shown in first-run syndication. To me, that would be a viable alternative television outlet for the show, and one could make a case for that, especially since there is a good track record of prime time shows making successful transitions to first-run syndication (including Baywatch and Too Close For Comfort). Moreover, it was considered as a possible outlet for America's Most Wanted after Fox canceled it last year, and before Lifetime picked it up.

You mean syndication where different networks across the nation could pick it up if they paid the price?

The accurate word is "stations", not "networks" (there's a difference). Otherwise, you're correct. A syndicated show is a show that is sold to numerous individual stations and are, therefore, generally seen at various times throughout the country, depending on what city you live in (or near).

Then how can we jump start getting UM in syndication? There's so much reality show garbage on TV on so many stations that SOMEONE must be interested in a REAL show like UM!

It won't be easy, especially since television is a very complex industry, so I will reiterate that it would take a lot of time and effort. So, if you are serious about this, you may have to prepare for the long haul.

However, it couldn't hurt to contact Cosgrove/Meurer and suggest syndication as an alternative outlet for UM, if they bring it back someday. But since they have no say on whether UM returns to the air, I don't recommend contacting them for the purpose of campaigning for new episodes.

I know this is a stupid idea but I'll ask anyway.

Have you ever thought about some fans getting together and filming their own episodes? There are so many good ideas over the past 10 years!

I would suggest getting Cosgrove/Meurer's written permission first. Otherwise, you could be sued!

With all the interest in: remaking things of the past, crime, drama, and reality TV - you wold think a new, fresh launch of UM would be easy to sell. Big bucks are waiting to me made :)

I totally agree! Now some station needs to step up to the plate! :)
