A Texas mother is furious that male vice principal left her daughter bruised and blistered after a spanking, which the girl opted for over another day of in-school suspension for cheating in class.

Taylor Santos, a sophomore at Springtown High School, northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, told school officials that she didn’t know another student had copied her classwork, but school officials gave both girls two days of in-school suspension as punishment.

After serving one day, Taylor said she didn’t want to miss any more classes, so she went to the vice principal’s office and opted instead for a paddling – a legal form of punishment in schools in Texas and 19 other states, according to the Center for Effective Discipline.

Because school policy says spanking or paddling requires that parents give permission, the vice principal had Taylor call her mother, Anna Jorgensen, who gave her approval.

"I knew school policy was females swatted females and males swatted males,” Jorgensen told WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth. “If Taylor wanted that, I said that would be fine.”

But what happened instead was the vice principal himself swatted Taylor while a woman was present in the room, despite school policy that states “corporal punishment shall be administered only by an employee who is the same sex as the student."

After learning who did the spanking and seeing the wounds on her daughter's body, Jorgensen said she was horrified.

"I came unglued," Jorgensen said. “It looked almost like it had been burned and blistered, it was so bad,” she said of her daughter’s bottom, adding that she took photos of injuries to prove how red they were.

Jorgensen called the vice principal to complain, but he told her it was perfectly normal for her daughter’s bottom to look like that. He reportedly added that he wasn’t aware of the school’s same-sex swatting policy.

Springtown Superintendent Mike Kelley told WFAA that school officials never administer corporal punishment unless a parent requests it. While he declined to speak on Taylor’s case specifically, he stressed that two adults are always present when corporal punishment is administered, but he said the school district may have made an error.

WFAA reported that Kelly wants to do away with the current policy because the male-to-female ratio of administrators at the school makes it a difficult policy to adhere to. He will reportedly ask the school board to get rid of the same gender requirement at a board meeting Monday.

For her part, Jorgensen said she will be in attendance at that meeting to urge the school board to keep the gender-based policy.

"I think Taylor is proof that we need to keep that policy," Jorgensen said. "I don't believe a man intentionally meant to do that to her, but it still happens, because men are too big and strong to be hitting 96-pound girls."

More than 220,000 school children nationwide were subjected to physical punishment during the 2005-2006 school year, according to the Center for Effective Discipline, citing the most recent figures available.

At one school in Florida, the woodshop class at Holmes County High School actually makes the paddles used to spank any of the more than 500 students.

I can't even believe that this is still going on, and to high schools students? Disturbing.

What sort of idiot parent lets a stranger strike their child? If that mom's brain ever clicks back into gear, she needs to call the cops and report this guy for inappropriate actions with a minor. This whole thing sounds sketchy as hell. $5 says the guy got a boner while he was administering this form of "discipline".

Oh well, we can't expect much from Texas, can we?

Both Guys and Girls were swatted on their butts with paddles on a daily basis in my homeroom in junior high school. I remember it being routine that the guys would all scoot up to the front of the class room to watch the girls get their bootys paddled by the big strong homeroom teacher. It was exciting yet normal at that time.

That's really disturbing. Why wouldn't they take them into a separate room? I don't even like the idea of young students getting paddled, but middle school and high school students? That's just downright creepy.

My teachers always took the students outside or in a separate room. But afterwards some of them would come in the classroom crying. My 6th grade teacher had his paddle hanging on the wall so we could all see it.

That's pretty offensive to those of us who were born and raised in Texas. Just sayin! Not everyone in Texas is like this and I certainly never had a teacher paddle me. I know that paddling did take place when I was in school but only in elementary/junior high but I've never heard of anything this awful.

I can't believe that they would even consider paddling a high school sophomore and I think this principal went WAY too far and was entirely out of line. He should be fired and reported for child abuse. How horrible to think that anyone would do something like that.

That poor student is bound to have lasting repercussions from this, and it's disturbing to think that this type of punishment is even used. I thought it had been abandoned years ago. I know it's not just Texas, but it's the 21st century and times have changed. Schools have metal decetcors for God's sake and they're still paddling?

I admire the student for not wanting to miss another day of school by opting for this punishment, but I think the parents should be present when it is done. She was very admirable in wanting a harsher punishment in exchange for missing more school. But this is just horrible all around.

Schmoopie, you are right and I apologize to you and any other Texans who may be on the board. :o Texas, along with Alabama, Florida, West Virginia, and my own state--Virginia, just make too-easy punchlines some days.

And I hear that Austin and San Antonio are pretty cool.

Sounds like something out Little House on the Prairie. Other posters say this was done to them in their schooldays?? Good Grief. I thought this punishment went out 100 years ago.

I went to school in Texas. When I was in the second grade, our teacher use to rag on one boy in our class all the time. I don't know if he deserved it or not, but one day she had his Dad come in and spank him in front of us. It was horrible. I just remember all of us sitting there in silence. I'd been hit at home myself, but there was something unsettling about seeing it happen to one of your friends. I heard about kids getting paddled in high school, but I never knew any that did. Personally, I think the practice should be banned. Give them Saturday School or community service.

I'm aware that corporal punishment has occurred more often in Catholic/Private schools as opposed to public. It has declined drastically since the 1970s which isn't really that long ago.

I think that the only time a teacher/staffer should "get physical" with the students is for extreme situations like breaking up a fight or if a little kid is misbehaving with a pen/pencil then they should be able to take it from them.

I say if the older high school kids (mostly guys) prefer paddling, I know how to make it worse.

The school picks the most unattractive person on the staff to dish it out.

I Give them Saturday School or community service.

My high school stopped their Saturday detentions before I started going there (1999) because it was getting harder to find teachers/staffers willing to give up their Saturdays to work it.

This poor little girl. There's no need of that. I would go nuts if anyone hit a loved one of mine. It's just wrong. I attended Catholic and public school. Those nuns were pretty free with their rulers. Fortunately, I never got whacked on the knuckles.

It was a regular occurrence back in the 1970's and early 1980's at least. I don't remember it ever happening at my HS but in Elementary and Junior High it did occur. I grew up mainly in NC. The teachers never contacted any parent. They just did it.

Unnessacarry...corporal punishment must be personal. Now I never got corporal punishment at school, but if I did something VERY wrong at home...the rod wasn't spared! But I know if I ever have a family, i'll talk to my wife on how we should discipline the children...I may just tell them about MY childhood that may be enough discipline they could handle in one day....I dunno.

The perverted and creepy principal did something to his daughter. To anyone who knows what a father is, seems like a natural question.

If the mother would have done her job and disiplined her child, then the school wouldnt have to have stepped in.
