Longtime "General Hospital" actor John Ingle has passed away at the age of 84. His family made the announcement on Facebook that he died Saturday (Sept. 15). And "General Hospital" executive producer Frank Valentini tweets :

"With great sadness, I share the news of John Ingle's passing. We love him and will miss him. John will always be a part of the #GH family."

Ingle played Edward Quartermaine on GH for over 450 episodes, making his final appearance in the role just last week. Daytime fans will also remember him from his time on "Days of Our Lives" as Mickey Horton.

His other credits included recurring roles on "The Drew Carey Show" and "Life Goes On," as well as playing Principal Gowan in "Heathers."

His family writes on Facebook:

"Father, Husband, Grandan, Great Grandan, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Teacher, Inspirer, Mentor: May You Soar with the Angels. You will forever hold a special place in the deepest corners of our hearts. You were joy, light and love. Goodness at its very best. For the rest of our days, we will all do our best to continue to make you proud. Rest in peace and continue to spread your generous spirit in the heavens above."

Ingle is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Grace-Lynne Martin Ingle, who passed away in February (pictured above together). They are survived by five daughters, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

So sad to hear of his passing, as he was an incredibly asset to both General Hospital and Days of Our Lives...

That's so sad, his character survived the epidemic in Port Charles. I wonder if they will write him out or just never mention him again. He looked so fraile on his final episode though it was good to see him again.

They did give him a royal send off, they waited for Thanksgiving week. It was so cool the way he and Lila walked up the staircase and into the light together. As always the Quartermaine Thanksgiving meal was ruined and pizzas mysteriously appeared on the doorstep.
