Ah, Family Guy. An edgier counterpart to The Simpsons famed for its controversial content and use of cutaway gags that, despite usually not being related to the story, were usually screamingly funny. After three seasons and forty-nine episodes, Fox decided that the show wasn’t do well enough to continue being made and broadcast.

Following massive DVD sales, the show was revived and has been running ever since. Critically and financially, it’s gone from strength to strength. Quality-wise, it’s not doing so well. It still raises a few giggles there and there a few flashes of genius such as Season Ten’s Thanksgiving episode, and the meticulously well plotted Killer Queen, but it’s nowhere near as good as it was prior to its cancellation. Various negative things have wormed their way into the series, driven down its quality, and reduced it to the point where it should be axed before it can slip any further. And these are my top five…

I never really watched this show that much but it's not one of my favorites. However, I can think of other shows that should be canceled before this one.

Some reasons why it should because it keeps doing the same things over and over. Examples being: Brian and Stewie are always having adventures. The season premires and finales are always an hour long, they keep referencing and spoofing the same movies over and over. Why can't American Dad have an hour long season finale for a change?

The movies Family Guy makes fun of constantly and does cutaways to are always Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, The Goonies, and National Lampoons Vacation Movies. Other 1980's pop culture references I don't mind so much, but stop doing the same things over and over. Let Brian go on an adventure with Chris and Meg for once. Brian doesn't have to be with Stewie all the time. Plus, it was stupid how suddenly the writers decided to make Quagmire hate Brian for no good reason. Quagmire never seemed to have a problem with Brian before. The writers did that to justify the characters feeling bad about Cleveland not being around anymore. Why doesn't Family Guy do a reference to other 1980's movies like Down And Out In Beverly Hills, or Raising Arizona for a change?

You are right on everything. I'm so sick of Brian and Stewie always together. I want to see them team up with other family members. Remember Stewie and Chris in Extra,Large, Medium? I want more of that.

i haven't watched the show as much the past couple of seasons - its hard to tell if a new episode is a rerun or not because they have gotten so repetitive.

they need to either just have a complete shake-up with the writers, maybe change some characters, or just end or spin it off.

I still think the Cleveland Show was better in terms of being fresher and more original than Family Guy, but of course Family Guy makes FOX more money so Cleveland had to go.

I agree. While FG does need some fresh stories--although I love the Stewie/Brian road movie parodies--The Simpsons has been lifeless for over a decade. Give us a last GOOD season of the Simpsons and then let it retire with a shred of dignity.

one thing that could help FG is that maybe Meg could graduate from HS and go to a local college (and to make it interesting have Connie Dimico go to the same place)...she's 18 anyway so the timing makes sense.

Much like the Adam Carolla-voiced Grim Reaper character, Family Guy has been dicing with death down the years.

In 2000, at the end of its second season, the Fox network announced the adult animation had been cancelled, but subsequently handed it a last minute reprieve and ordered an additional 13 new episodes.

However, two years later, the show was canned for real when Fox officially announced it would be going off the air, and for three years, that would be the last we’d see of Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy.

That was, until 2005, when positive DVD sales and syndicated ratings caught the network’s attention and persuaded them to renew it, handing yet another chance to Peter Griffin and co.

For the most part, the decision to breathe life back into Family Guy appears to have been a good decision on the face of it – nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards, with four wins, the show has and continues to be a hit with fans.

But, having been running for almost a decade since its initial cancellation, is it time to call it quits for real?

Has the show lost its edge and – most importantly – its humour, and does MacFarlane even care anymore?

Here, we answer some of those questions and run through 5 Reasons Why Family Guy Should Be Cancelled…

Family Guy is the only FOX show I watch on Sundays, I still think it hasn't lost it's charm or edge and I like when Stewie and Brian go on adventures. The show isn't afraid to tackle risky subjects and I always look forward to the cutaway joke scenes, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't that even the show itself pokes fun of it.

I'm sure there are a lot more reasons than just 5.;) (Sorry- I don't care for this show- I'd be happy to see it off the air. No offense to the fans.) (Yes, I know- if you don't like it; don't watch it.;) Exactly.)

I myself still like the show. The cutway gags are probably the best parts, but I feel that it should make more references to more obscure shows and stuff.

I just it would be a good ending.

Family Guy should end as an all finales in a finale. Peter and the Chicken's scene will be like The Fugitive, everyone at Pawtucket Ale get laid-off and everyone hugs like Mary Tyler Moore, and the last scene we see Seth MacFarlane and Mila Kunis in bed like in Newhart.

Okay...if Family Guy doesn't do that...I'll use that for my show.

I watched some of the first season episodes on Adult Swim last night. I was struck by how much better they were that the current ones. They had actual stories, the characters weren't all detestable pigs, and there was some kind of connection to reality.

I think McFarlane has admitted he'd wanted to end the show a while back but just kept it on the air for fans. And yeah, if it keeps getting good ratings the network will probably keep asking for it to return, but really, it's way past time for Seth to do the honorable thing and put this once clever show out of its misery. It's painful to watch now.

I just hope it doesn't stay on for 27 seasons like The Simpsons.

Well, South Park (which I don't think has been "edgy" since the early-mid 2000s) is headed into its 20th Season with no end in sight, so Family Guy being on the air for several more seasons wouldn't surprise me...

The fact that these worn-out shows remain on the air just shows how sad the state of television is today and how the entertainment industry has either:

1. Completely run out of ideas for good quality shows.

2. Is otherwise willing to accept mediocrity due to how expensive TV production has gotten.

I saw a rerun of an ep where Brian was a real estate agent...I forgot to laugh.

I feel this show should end before it gets behind.

What Year/Episode Did You Give Up on Family Guy? (http://officialfan.proboards.com/thread/517150/year-episode-give-family-guy)

1. Family Guy

Does anybody actually have any respect for Family Guy anymore? The once hilarious animated sitcom that brought Seth MacFarlane into the limelight now stands as the prime example of a show that needs to go off the air as soon as possible. It’s not just that the plots are lazy and uninspired, or the jokes (if you can call them that) don’t even have proper punchlines; it’s more to do with the fact that nobody working on Family Guy seems to care.

Episodes come and go with little fanfare, after all, and the writers clearly don’t respect their fans. Remember when they killed off Brian Griffin in an attempt to boost ratings? Even more annoyingly, the show frequently riffs on classic movies in the least imaginable way possible – by just having the Family Guy characters in place of the original characters. No jokes; no clever twists – just a shot-for-shot rendering of a famous scene, void of humor.

Family Guy is a shambles of the highest order – the TV equivalent of an embarrassing uncle who can’t help making things awkward. After 13 seasons (most of which have been lackluster), enough is enough. Even Seth MacFarlane has admitted that his show is well past its prime (he saw the high-point as sometime around season three, and he’d be right). At least Matt Groening seems to genuinely believes that The Simpsons is as good as it ever was.
