One of the saddest cases ever profiled on UM.
The name of one of the little boys that died in the shack was named Scott Johnson. For some reason, Unsolved Mysteries did not give the name of the other boy. (They always said, Scott Johnson and one of his friends)
It's obvious that the boys were murdered. The shack was not very big, and they would obviously have known to leave it if it caught on fire. A theory stated that the boys were probably playing with matches and burned themselves, but that idea is absurd. All they had to do to exit the shack was push on the door, there was no lock. The only way they could be trapped inside was if somebody was holding the door shut on the outside.
And seeing that there were witnesses that saw 2 men hanging around the shack when it caught fire and the fact that the boys were inside screaming at the same time proves that it was murder.
A couple weeks before he was murdered, Scott found a 100 dollar bill while playing in the field. If that money was in fact used for drug deals and the boys were murdered because the men thought that they would report them, I think those killers had to have been as stupid as you can get. Little kids don't even know what drugs are, and they didn't know the names. Whatever.
Unfortunately, since this all happened in the early 70's (or late 60's, I can't remember) and since the police officers of the town have long since retired or moved away, there's probably no chance of this case ever being solved. Just one of those tragedies where a killer never gets caught. Very sad. :(
