I've just discovered Hazel on Antenna TV. Our 11 year old son and I watch every episode.
We just finished the episode called Dorothy's Birthday. I guess we must have missed something in past episodes. In one scene, Hazel is sad and comes into her bedroom. On Hazel's nightstand is a framed photo of someone in a sailor uniform. She picks the photo up and says something along the line of "In 25 years you could have sent me 1 postcard".
Who is in the photo?

That was her steady boyfriend or fiance. The love of her life. He was in the military and I think he was killed in action.

Why, that's Gus! Yes, the love of Hazel's life. He promised to return. But he didn't. He never even wrote. And yet Hazel couldn't let go of her love for him, so she kept a picture of him next to her bed.
In episode 17 of season 1 (that's actually 6 episodes prior to "Dorothy's Birthday," which is episode 23 of season 1) Gus makes an appearance in Hazel's dream sequence (as a young man, but we see him only from the back).
Hazel gets a marriage proposal from George's client Mr.Griffin, because she reminds him of his mother (who was also a great cook). In Hazel's dream, Gus finally returns to stop the wedding.
And he wasn't killed. Gus actually does return on the show in the 2nd season finale in the shape of actor Patrick McVey. He and Hazel make an attempt to rekindle their romance, while little Harold is worried he will lose Hazel for good, which leads to a touching scene.

You are so right. I forgot about that episode where he comes back and he and Hazel go on a couple of dates. And I own all three seasons so far. My memory stinks.....
