Why is "Singing In The Rain" considered a classical? If you disagree, why?

I've never heard it called a classical....did you mean a classic?

I think it's a classic for many reasons.... great cast, great acting, great mixture of comedy and romance, great music....

I know you only asked for people who disagree, but I think it's a classic...

I agree with Bootsy. Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds do a great job in the movie. We viewed this film in a film class I took (sure sign #1 it's a classic if it's in a class) and one of the things that makes it historical is that it accurately portrays the coming of sound film and how it destroyed many people's careers because they just didn't have the voice for "talkies."

:) That was a great movie! Every time I see a lamp post or am out in the rain, I just want to dance around and sing!

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN is considered a classic for many reasons. First of all, it was one of the first movies ever made about movies. The title that they wanted to use was "HOLLYWOOD" which I think would have suited it better. The film of course had some great performances, the best in Gene Kelly's career in my opinon. He was a great talent, and this is his most famous work. It additionally launched the career of Debbie Reynolds, and Jean Hagan received an Oscar nomination (and she should have won!) for her portrayal of Lina Lamont.

Also, there were so many musicals coming out at that time, MGM churned out probably 20-50 musicals a year. SINGIN' was just special, because it really was the best of the whole group. The script was perfect, the costumes and sets were perfect, and the music was perfect.

There were also plenty of inside jokes. Many of the cast and crew members had parents that had worked during the silent era that could help with the gags. Additionally, anyone who has watched way too many Gene Kelly movies (like me for example) will notice that almost every costume he wears in that film is based on his earlier films! He covers everything from FOR ME AND MY GAL to THE THREE MUSKATEERS, which is really fun to watch.

Whew! This has been long-winded. You asked the film-major why SINGIN' is a classic, sorry, but you got an essay!

It's one of my all time favourite movies, I have it on DVD.

The dance routines and the acting are great, and it has some funny moments.

 Why do I get the feeling you are having us help you with homework again?!?

Anyway, I loved the whole thing with Lina Lamont and how she kept having to repeat her lines: "I caaaaaan't stand him" "No, it's I caaaaan't stand him" lol, if you haven't seen the movie you have no clue what I'm talking about because I don't know how to write the different ways they said those lines.

It is a song. A song from a movie of the same name...

"I'm singin' in the rain
Just singin' in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm hap-py again!
I'm laughin' at clouds
So dark up above
There's a song in my heart
And I'm ready for love...."

or something like that......

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I'm singin' in the rain,
Just singin' in the rain.
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again.

I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above,
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love.

Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place,
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face.

I walk down the lane,
With a happy refrain:
Just singin'
Singin' in the rain!

Actually the song isn't from the movie. The song was written years before, and it was what inspired the movie. (Can you tell I love this movie? Does it show?)

ROFL! I go around imitating that part ALL the time! It's the best! "An' I cayn't stanem!" That, and Lina's little speech at the end where she would use the correct pronunciation for some words and totally screw up others.

Another one of my favorite parts of the movie is the "Moses Supposes" bit. Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously. Now Moses, he knowses his toeses aren't roses, as Moses supposes his toeses to be! And at the end of the song where they have the lip shape thing and went "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA". It's great...

Oh, a few more parts I love, just had to add, don't mind me...

"What am I, dumb or something?" -Lina

"Oh, didn't you hear? She's irresistable. She told me so herself." -Cosmo

"People?! I ain't people! I'm a... (reads newspaper) a shimmering, glowing star in the cinema firmament!" -Lina

(Talking about a huge, heavy wig.) "Gee, this wig weighs a ton. What dope'd wear a thing like this?" -Lina
"Everyone used to wear them, Lina" -Rosco
"Well, then everyone was a dope." -Lina

As soon as I saw your question I wondered why the heck you would ask that, neveminding the "classical" error. So...did you get a good grade on your homework assignment?

Oh, and yes, I would consider "singing in the Rain a Classic.
