Keck's Exclusives: "One Day at a Time" Vet to Guest on "Hot in Cleveland"

This past April's TV Land Awards reunited the cast of the 1975-84 Norman Lear sitcom "One Day at a Time". During the reunion, Valerie Bertinelli told me she was campaigning hard for her old co-star Pat Harrington Jr. (a.k.a. Dwayne Schneider) to guest star on her current TV Land sitcom, "Hot in Cleveland".

Well turns out Bertinelli wasn't just blowin' smoke.





In a clever nod to his Schneider character, who was a building superintendent, 83-year-old Harrington Jr. has been cast on "Cleveland" as Mr. Sherden, the manager of the apartment building where Bertinelli's boyfriend (Jay Harrington) lives.

Harrington Jr. guests on the fourth episode of "Hot's" new season, which premieres November 28 at 10 p.m.





Last year, Bertinelli's "One Day at a Time" mom, Bonnie Franklin, guest starred on "Hot", while "One Day" co-star Mackenzie Phillips turned down a guest role that would have required her to share a lesbian kiss with Bertinelli.

Producers are looking for an alternate role for Phillips to play.

Keck's Exclusives First Look: "One Day" Reunion on "Hot in Cleveland"

"Hot in Cleveland's" latest stunt casting will reunite former "One Day at a Time" stars Valerie Bertinelli and Pat Harrington Jr. But the happy occasion has been tainted by the news that their former costar, Bonnie Franklin, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

"I told her my family is going to be on its knees praying for her," reports Harrington, who won an Emmy and Golden Globe for portraying nosy superintendent Dwayne Schneider on the 1975-1984 sitcom. "Bonnie's our leader and she's got muscle."





Harrington, 83, says he speaks at least once a month with Franklin, who last year made her own "Cleveland" guest appearance.

Harrington will play Mr. Sherden on the TV Land sitcom, the innocent-minded manager of the apartment building where Bertinelli's character's new love interest (Jay Harrington, no relation) lives.

"Valerie's kept her beauty remarkably," says Harrington. "She's in her fifties but still looks like she's 11."
