Movie Reviews: 2016: Obama's America
It was no match for Michael Moore’s anti-George Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, but Dinesh D’Souza’s anti-Barack Obama documentary 2016: Obama’s America was surprisingly hot over the weekend.
Widening to 1,091 theaters, it took in $6.51 million, amounting to $5,966 per theater.
The film was not shown in advance to critics, who tend to be a liberal lot, but several bought tickets to see it over the weekend. Their reviews were perhaps predictable.
Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times writes:
“The film is not after new insight, rather, it’s intent on laying out the arguments of a man who has given the same lecture countless times. That makes for a sluggish film. Even its outrage falls flat.”
Michael O’Sullivan in the Washington Post dismissed the film as:
“a slick infomercial … a textbook example of preaching to the choir.”
Andy Webster in the New York Times summarized the film without critiquing it but noted that in the theater where he saw it Saturday night, the audience at the conclusion clapped and cried “Romney!,” “Ron Paul!,” “Reagan!” and “Another Reagan!”
Somewhat surprisingly the film was not shown in advance to the New York Post‘s Kyle Smith, who wears his conservatism on his sleeve, but who says that he still hasn’t seen it.
On his blog, Smith noted that the film “looks like it’ll be one of the biggest documentaries ever.” His posted was headed: “Whoa.”
And John Nolte, editor at the conservative Breitbart.com, commented:
“The corrupt media will likely tell you 2016 is a success because of racism and hate, but the real reason people are flocking is to try and grasp a better understanding of this awful, divisive, inept, and anti-American failure currently sitting in the Oval Office.”
