I got this information from the My Three Sons page on the IMDB website . There are a few episodes that feature bits and pieces of information about the first Mrs . Douglas . In episode # 1, ( "Chip Off The Old Block" ), Pamela MacLish ( Patricia Barry ) asks Steve how long he's been a widower and Steve says six years . In either episode # 86 ( "Going Steady" ) or # 87 ( "Mother Bub" ), Chip broke down over the loss of his mother .
In episode # 90 ( "Roman Holiday" ), Steve hesitates about going to Rome with his family because he spent time with the first Mrs . Douglas there . The most information ever given about her is in episode # 122 ( "The Proposals" ) . We learned that her name was Louise O'Casey Douglas, and that she passed away suddenly just before Chip's first birthday . I get the idea that this episode showed her tombstone . A second season episode has Chip looking at a 8 x 10 photo of her, and this is an in -- joke, as the photo is clearly a publicity shot of Fred MacMurray's wife June Haver .
In one of the very last black and white episodes, Steve explains to Mike that a questionaire he filled out on behalf of Mike's mom represented the couple after twelve years of marriage, a marriage full of discussion, compromises and even fights . Steve then reads a letter from the first Mrs . Douglas calling off their wedding saying they had nothing in common and that their views were so far apart, the marriage could never succeed . The letter is very specific in telling the differing views that each parent had . So -- for those of you who wondered about the first Mrs . Douglas, this does show hat she was not totally dismissed as a non -- entity .
There's a mention in one of the color episodes that Chip was so young when she died that he doesn't remember her at all . Apparently more than a couple of years had passed when the series began . To my knowledge, the cause of her death was never revealed . References are not too uncommon, though sometimes indirect . In episode # 202 ( "Steve and the Huntress" ) contains references, possibly the most of any episode, but still not much info .
In episode # 214, ( "The Wheels" ), Robbie mentions that Charley is from his mother's side of the family . On at least one occasion, Rob asks Steve to tell him about his courtship prior to his marriage. While never dwelled upon, memories of the first Mrs . Douglas remain . It's strange that Bub never mentioned her . She was his own daughter .
