Dick Van Dyke to Receive SAG Life Achievement Award

Dick Van Dyke will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment in January.

SAG-AFTRA said Tuesday that the "beloved actor, singer, dancer, writer and comedian" will receive the performers union’s honor at the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 27, 2013.

The annual award goes to an actor who fosters the “finest ideals of the acting profession." The awards show will air live on TNT and TBS.





Born Richard Wayne Van Dyke, the 86-year-old-star has been honored with five Emmys, one Tony Award and a Grammy.

“Dick is the consummate entertainer - an enormously talented performer whose work has crossed nearly every major category of entertainment," said SAG-AFTRA co-president Ken Howard.

"From his career-changing Broadway turn in 'Bye Bye Birdie' and his deadpan humor in the Emmy winning 'Dick Van Dyke Show', to his unforgettable performance as Bert in 'Mary Poppins', he sets a high bar for actors."





Said SAG-AFTRA co-president Roberta Reardon:

"With Dick, it's so much more than the proverbial triple threat. He started his career as a radio announcer, game show host and comedian and was a spokesman for Kodak, among numerous other roles over his nearly 60-year career."

She added: "His contributions to the success of the business and to his fellow performers is legendary as is his work with a number of the leading ladies of our times, including Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore - both previous Life Achievement Award recipients."

Alec Baldwin, Carl Reiner to Honor Dick Van Dyke at SAG Awards

Alec Baldwin and Carl Reiner will both present Dick Van Dyke with the Life Achievement Award at the 19th Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 27.

Back in August, SAG-AFTRA announced that it would honor the 87-year-old entertainer with the trophy for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment.

"From his career-changing Broadway turn in Bye Bye Birdie and his deadpan humor in the Emmy winning Dick Van Dyke Show, to his unforgettable performance as Bert in Mary Poppins, he sets a high bar for actors," the guild's co-president Ken Howard said at the time.



Reiner created the "Dick Van Dyke Show", and also co-starred in the Emmy-winning classic sitcom as the star's producer, Alan Brady.

Van Dyke has been honored with five Emmys, one Tony Award and a Grammy.

Baldwin, who's got seven SAGs under his belt, is nominated this year for his role as Jack Donaghy on "30 Rock" and as part of the ensemble cast.

I'm glad that Carl Reiner will be part of this evenig as he and Dick were such a big part of each others careers. I don't really understand why Alec Baldwin is involved but I guess it goes to show how universally loved Dick is when two such diverse people are involved in honoring him.
