The next morning was the beginning of a new month, October. The sun was still bright, but my heart had still felt gloom. I felt a little better talking to a lady from the church about how we deal with problems that morning, then proceeded to go to the Prayer Chapel. Everything was moving along smoothly as I joined the worshippers and prayer partners when, suddenly, IT HAPPENED...
I stood around in th chapel musing over my problems, watching the worshippers when a large convoy of trucks drove past outside, AND THE BUILDING STARTED TO RATTLE--this was no truck convoy, it was AN EARTHQUAKE!! I freaked out, WHAT WAS GOING ON??!! But strangely, instead of ducking for cover, the men in the chapel sttod together holding their hands out, praying in loud voices, as if they were sending out waves of the Spirit through the tremors. As the rumbling subsided, I went out, deathly afraind of the possibility of the ground shaking up again. I was suprised none of the people in the chapel took cover. I was
on edge for the rest of the day. Around town, I could see signs of the quake's wreckage, broken windows, cracks on buildings, jars in stores shattered and marinated fruits spilled out onto the floors. If there was anything that this geological upheaval told me, nothing was certain in life except uncertainty.
That Friday, the church college group leader decided to chip in to help me go on a group trip up the coast to Pismo Beach. Seeing that I was flat broke (constantly), he came up with the $70 out of a humanitarian gesture (I do remember the stipulation of "paying it back whenever"--famous last words.) So I was off on my way with some friends that evening, sitting in the front seat with a very nice fellow, with whom I talked about my nifty coversion experience from almost eight years before and how I changed my musical tastes in '84 from heavy metal (Ratt, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot) to Christian music (including--and ESPECIALLY Lisa's music!!) So then I went on to talking about My Most Favorite Subject in the World, and the driver was really impressed with how this girl made such an impression in my life.
