View Full Version : a very "Kookie" Wheel of Fortune pilot from 1974
let'swatchtv 07-26-2012, 05:11 AM ...from the people who brought you the 1973 opening pilot for Chuck Woolery's Shopper's Bazaar
you've all heard the rumors, now see him in action. here is the first of ten minutes or so of the second of two pilots for a certain "well-knowned" daytime/syndicated giant, hosted by Edd "Dumba**" Byrnes. how do you think he did? well, watch and find out for yourself!

P.S. The solution to the 2nd round puzzle for (in Edd Byrnes case) something good to eat/food & drink/on the menu/thing was "SPAGHETTI" just in case if you were curious
or not.

Agreed, very uncalled for.
howilu 07-26-2012, 06:05 PM As his memorable character Kookie would put it, it wasn't "The Ginchiest" performance but it saw why Merv went with Chuck Woolery instead of Edd Byrnes.
snowpeck 07-26-2012, 06:09 PM Well the fact of the matter is Byrnes was drunk at the time (he admitted so in his autobiography) and was allegedly caught rehearsing his vowels in the hallway before the taping.

alright listen folks, i do not want to start a flamewar here so give me a chance to explain ok, the reason why i said that is not becuase of his great and wonderful skills as an actor i mean heck he was a great actor on 77 Sunset Strip back in the day i assume. i'm just saying that his game show hosting skills were terrible for Wheel that's all i'm saying
so again his great and wonderful acting skills is not an issue here im just saying that as a game show host he wasn't that good
i hope i have tried my best to clear any confusion here especially for you 77 Sunset Strip fans!
let'swatchtv 07-26-2012, 10:07 PM Agreed, very uncalled for.
if my description of the former 77 Suset Strip actor on him hosting Wheel of Fortune was too harsh in anyway, shape, or form then i apologize to each and everyone of you. okay
i'm just saying to Mr. Byrnes don't quit your day job in other words keep doing the acting more than the game show hosting that's all i'm trying to say folks.
also just to make you guys sure that i'm talking about Edd "Kookie" Byrnes on hosting Wheel of Fortune and not his powerful acting on 77 Sunset Strip here are a few expressions four of them to be exact on how i feel about Edd Byrnes hosting skills for Wheel of Fortune(and a little be on Susan Stafford forgetting to turn over one particular vowel in round 1):
here's my feelings on Susan Stafford on not turning the third "A" in "TELLY SAVALAS" by leaving it as "TELLY SAVAL_S":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KMbHNxSgjM
here's my feeling on Edd Byrnes (order-wise)on giving player 1 "aka Tanya"the opportunity to start off round 2 instead of player 2 "aka Frank":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2xDJPc-yaM&feature=related
here's my feelings on "Kooky" saying the worst catch phrase in game show pilot history "SOLVE THE WHEEL":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSyVIbLh4QU
and finally...
here's my feelings on Edd "Kooky" Byrnes hosting Wheel of Fortune:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ge4_0jF2nc
and again i hope you guys understand that?
also i'm not the only one who thinks Edd "Kookie" Byrnes hosting skills for "America's Game" was bad, check out this article by Robert Seidlemen about Edd's terrible game show hosting skills courtesy from our friends at Game Show Garbage:http://www.gameshowgarbage.com/eddbyrnes.html

You've aske for it. Now you've got it; the first Edd Byrnes pilot of America's Game! He's in the form you would expect if you've seen the clip of his second Wheel pilot. Pretty much everything is the same as that (even the prizes!).
Ladies and Gentlemen...Enjoy the failure of the "Kookie"!
by the way folks this is the 2nd pilot not the 1st
also here are the solutions to the 4 round puzzles from the 2nd "Wheel" pilot: WARNING: "CONTAINS SPOILERS"
Round 1: "PRINCESS ANNE"/(PERSON)
Round 2: "SIRLOIN STEAK"/(THING)/something good to eat/(FOOD & DRINK)/(ON THE MENU)
Round 3: "MOTHER GOOSE"/(FICTIONAL CHARACTER)
Round 4: "FRANK SINATRA"/(PERSON)/a well-knowned entertainer/(PROPER NAME)

And the other way you can distinguish the pilots are in the 1st pilot Edd is wearing the normal game show host attire (i.e. suit and tie) and in the 2nd pilot, he's wearing the mid-70s leisure suits flashy jackets.

thanks for explaning the seperation thing megamanj2004, even though we were all suspecting the 1st pilot in full the 2nd pilot was slightly better but Edd was still a "Bully" to contestant on forcing them to spin the wheel to get more cash but obviously in Edd's case he wanted them to either land on a Bankrupt or Lose A Turn, but either way sober or not he will never become the next Chuck Woolery/Pat Sajak/Rolf Benirschke/Bob Goen in the amazing world of "America's Game" in other word's he got fired a.k.a Merv kicked "Kookie" to the curb.
but I hope that David Downs from the land of Youtube will upload pilot#1 of "Wheel" before the end of this year do you agree?

And he made some other gaffes like forgetting to count the money on the 1st pilot when a player spun $225 and had 3 letters in the puzzle. It should be $675 and not $775. And at times he kept saying "Spin the puzzle."
I hope he does upload the rest of the 1st pilot.

Me too Megamanj2004, Me too!

never gets old!
also what never gets old is Edd saying "Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!" for some odd reason.
