He created an iconic, unforgettable character in George Jefferson. No one can ever look at him and not see George. Ten years plus the couple on AITF is nothing to sneeze at. I wasn't a big "Amen" fan, but it was a popular show, too.

Always interesting to consider how much younger than Isabel Sanford he was.

Variety is usually a trusted source.

Sherman Hemsley, who memorably starred as the comically irascible George Jefferson on CBS' long-running sitcom "The Jeffersons," died Tuesday, apparently of natural causes, in El Paso, Texas. He was 74.

Hemsley's George Jefferson began as a recurring character on Norman Lear's seminal 1970s sitcom "All in the Family." Spinoff "The Jeffersons," starring Hemsley and Isabel Sanford as his wife, "Weezy," ran from 1975-85. Hemsley was nominated for an Emmy for lead actor in a comedy in 1984. (Sanford died in 2004.)

Hemsley also starred for five seasons beginning in 1986 in the NBC comedy "Amen" as Deacon Ernest Frye.

The actor reprised the role of George Jefferson in the mid-'90s on two episodes of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," starring Will Smith, and in a 2011 episode of Tyler Perry sitcom "House of Payne." He also played Jefferson in an uncredited bit in the 1998 feature comedy "Jane Austen's Mafia."

But Hemsley was a busy actor for decades in roles unrelated to George Jefferson. He recurred role on ABC's Henson sitcom "Dinosaurs," "Sister, Sister" and "The Hughleys" and starred in UPN's brief series "Goode Behavior" and 2011 sitcom "Clunkers." He guested on the likes of "Fantasy Island" and "The Love Boat," "227," "Hangin' With Mr. Cooper," "Designing Women" and "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman."

He voiced himself in a 2005 episode of "Family Guy."

Hemsley also appeared in a number of feature films, including "Love at First Bite," "Club Fed" and "For the Love of a Dog."

Sherman Alexander Hemsley was born in Philadelphia and studied drama in New York with Lloyd Richards at the Negro Ensemble Company and then at Vinnette Carroll's Urban Arts Company. He made his Broadway debut in the musical comedy (and outrageous racial satire) "Purlie," toured with the show and later appeared with Robert Guillaume in 1981 TV adaptation.

There are no immediate survivors.

This is indeed sad news. I was just thinking of Sherman when I went to NYC back in May to get a pic of the building used as the Jefferson's deluxe apartment in the sky. 74 is a pretty good age these days, but I though he had more in him. He outlived Lionel, Helen, and Bentley, but not Tom, Louise, Mother Jefferson and obviously Florence and Jenny.

Sherman Hemsley was funny in everything I ever saw him in. He made the character of George Jefferson, who is in my Top 5 TV characters of all time. Even Norman Lear held off casting the role for years so Sherman could play him. In my opinion, George Jefferson is as iconic as Archie Bunker. I loved that character from the first ep I saw of the show way back in 1999 at the age of 12 when Nick at Nite began airing it.

Thanks for the laughs, Sherman. You were immensely talented and you will be greatly missed. Pardon the cliche, but you are now truly in that deluxe apartment in the sky.

'Jeffersons' star Sherman Hemsley dies at 74

Actor Sherman Hemsley, famous for playing Archie Bunker's former neighbor George Jefferson in the "All in the Family" spin-off "The Jeffersons," has died at 74, his representative said in a statement to Reuters.
On "The Jeffersons," Hemsley played a dry-cleaning tycoon who'd worked his way up from a small store to a chain. Isabel Sanford played his wife Louise, whom George often called Weezie, and Marla Gibbs played the couple's maid, Florence.

As with producer Norman Lear's "All in the Family," the show didn't shy away from racial humor and jokes. Hemsley's George was in his own way as stubborn and prejudiced as Archie Bunker, regularly trying to exploit his own maid, and often delivering jokes at the expense of Helen and Tom Willis, a married couple of different races.
"The Jeffersons" ran from 1975 to 1985. After that show ended, Hemsley moved on to star as Deacon Earnest Frye on the sitcom "Amen."

Hemsley also performed on Broadway and appeared on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," "The Hughleys" and "Clunkers." He also voiced Triceratops B.P. Richfield on Jim Henson's "Dinosaurs."
Hemsley was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe, both for his "Jeffersons" role.
In 1989, he released a single, "Ain't That A Kick in the Head."
Hemsley never married and has no children. He was living in El Paso, Texas at the time of his death.

Regarding Sherman, a wonderful actor who did other things besides JEFFERSONS AND AMEN, I saw him on a rerun of INCREDIBLE HULK recently! There were rumors about his private life for years, which some might figure out. I know about 4 years ago he was touring the country doing a stand up type of performance and it was canceled due to some illness. Note in the El Paso paper it was his nurse who found him, so he must have been sick to have had a nurse tending to him.

Marla Gibbs statement:
“I am shocked, and thought Sherman was doing very well. I am saddened to hear that Sherman has made his transition. We were trying to come up with a new show that we could participate in, but of course, that cannot happen now.”

http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2012/07/24/sherman-hemsley-star-of-the-jeffersons-dead-at-74/?mod=google_news_blog

Sherman Hemsley, Star of ‘The Jeffersons,’ Dead at 74
Actor and comedian Sherman Hemsley has passed away at the age of 74, reportedly in his El Paso, Texas home. The cause of his death is not yet known.

Hemsley was best known for his role as the family man and businessman George Jefferson in the sitcom “The Jeffersons,” which ran from 1975 to 1985.

Marla Gibbs, who co-starred in “The Jeffersons,” sent Speakeasy this statement: “I am shocked, and thought Sherman was doing very well. I am saddened to hear that Sherman has made his transition. We were trying to come up with a new show that we could participate in, but of course, that cannot happen now.”

“The Jeffersons” was a spinoff of “All in the Family,” which featured Hemsley as the same character. After two seasons he moved onto “The Jeffersons” where he co-starred with Isabel Sanford and Gibbs, among others. He played the role of George for 11 seasons.

The show made a mark in television history for its funny, biting, sometimes slapstick humor, and for putting an entrepreneurial upper middle class black family front and center in a television program. The show’s soulful theme song was also an announcement of purpose: “Well we’re movin on up/ To the east side/ To a deluxe apartment in the sky/ Movin on up/ To the east side/ We finally got a piece of the pie.”

Hemsley would go on to star in “The Love Boat,” “Amen” and to voice a character in “Dinosaurs.”

Before becoming an actor, Hemsley served in the Air Force for four years.

He was unmarried and had no children.

Gibbs said in her statement “Sherman was one of the most generous co-stars I have ever worked with. He happily set me up so that I could slam him, and I did the same for him. I shall miss him deeply.”

You can leave your thoughts about Hemsley in the comments.

I was surprised to find out about this tonight. I expected IMDb to post a big banner announcing his death, but they still have him among their news items, so it's not like they're completley disregarding the man.

What is somewhat remarkable to me is how YOUNG he was. When The Jeffersons started in 1975, he was in his late 30's. To me, he always looked OLDER than his age, which is why he and Weezy looked the same age.

I think this is pretty reliable, but Sherman was a big prog rock fan, including knowing the members of the band YES, and supposedly dropped LSD with the lead singer. Hemsley was also a big fan of another group called Gong and even invited the lead singer of that group to LA. Upon leaving the airport in a limo, Sherm fired up a joint and was shocked that the lead singer of his favorite band did not toke up.

The singer also describes two Puerto Ricans in the basement of the house cooking LSD, with a sign of warning not to open the door without confirming who that person was. He also claims to have seen freebase cocaine there.

Regarding Sherman, a wonderful actor who did other things besides JEFFERSONS AND AMEN, I saw him on a rerun of INCREDIBLE HULK recently!

I remember that episode of the Incredible Hulk. Interesting to see him without a mustache because The Jeffersons was still on the air at the time and he always had one on that show.

Is the last season avilable in the trading circuit? Was there a final episode made that had closure to the series or no? I had quit watching the show probably around 1983, maybe got burned out on it or something only to stumble across it a couple years later and was shocked to see it still on the air. I think Alice, Jeffersons, Dukes of Hazzard probably ran a season or two longer than they should have.

Perhaps in the case of the late astronaut Sally Ride, we will find out more about Sherman's private life not that it matters a great deal, but then again maybe not and his wishes may have been not to reveal things publicly even after the fact.

Off topic a bit but Norman Lear is writing s book(Memoir and about the shows he created)) that will be coming out sometime in the near future,

Norman Lear statement about Sherman:
http://triblive.com/news/2267672-74/hemsley-jeffersons-family-character-archie-bunker-jefferson-george-lear-acting

"He was a love of a guy" and "immensely talented," Norman Lear, producer of "The Jeffersons" and "All in the Family," said after learning of his death. El Paso police said the actor was found dead at a local home where neighbors said he'd lived for years, and that no foul play is suspected.

"When the Jeffersons moved in next door to the Bunkers, I wanted to deliver the George Jefferson who could stand up to Archie Bunker," Lear recalled Tuesday. "It took some weeks before I remembered having seen Sherman in `Purlie' on Broadway."

Hemsley read for the part and "the minute he opened his mouth he was George Jefferson," Lear said. Hemsley was smaller than O'Connor's Archie but "he was every bit as strong as Archie," Lear said.

What's with all the petty bickering and stuff in this thread? Cast Member vs Recurring Guest Star? Really? And I don't get the poster who kept accusing all the reports of his death as being lies.

He was 74 years old. When people who are elderly (70s and beyond) pass away, natural causes is commonly used as the cause of death. It just means that due to age their bodies gave out. There is nothing sinister about it. It's sad that he had no family at all. I hope he had lots of friends and people who cared about him.

Another TV legend gone from us in a horrible year for sitcom deaths. I heard about it last Thursday while watching a football game and I felt very sad.

I wasn't a big fan of the Jeffersons or the other Norman Lear shows, but I did love to watch Sherman Hemsley and thought that he was a funny man. I remember seeing him in "Amen" too and I also loved him on "Dinosaurs". That was a show that was cancelled much too soon. It was hilarious!

Regarding "The Jeffersons", there were a couple of favourite episodes of mine that reveal to me what a fine actor he was. The first was the one where Gary Coleman was a guest star around a year or two before he starred on "Diff'rent Strokes" and you could tell then that he was headed for future stardom. The scenes that Gary and Sherman did together were wonderful and it showed a softer side that we didn't see before from George Jefferson, particularly on "All In The Family" when the character was portrayed as a black Archie Bunker. I don't know if Sherman and Gary worked together after that but I'm sure they could have made a great and believable father and son on some other series.

The other episode that I loved a lot was when Louise brought home a very shy little girl who wouldn't talk or play with anyone and always looked sad and miserable until she met George and, to everyone's surprise, they instantly connected. The girl immediately starts to talk and act like him and starts calling everyone "honkies" like George does. This made Louise mad and she kept blaming George for being a bad influence on her but then she sees how happy they are together and thanks him for bringing the little girl out of her shell and making a new and improved person out of her.

I think that's the way that Sherman should be remembered. He might have been a little rough around the edges and his style does take a while to get used to, but then you find that he can make you laugh and you feel happier afterwards. Thank you Sherman Helmsley for making the world laugh and making us all feel happier. Amen!!

Sherman Hemsley, who played George Jefferson on The Jeffersons, has died at 74, according to police.

The actor played Jefferson in All in the Family and its successful spin-off, The Jeffersons.

He also played Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen.

Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas, police tell TMZ. El Paso TV news station KVIA also reports the actor died there, citing a friend.

Hemsley had no wife or children.

There once was a rumor floating around, suggesting that he might have been gay.

They both played racists against each other, as did Red Foxx in Sanford & Son.

I just watched an ep of Amen, titled Child's Play, where Sherman Hemsley as the Deacon, was taking over the church's day care center.

The kids had tied him to a chair, while they romped around the room making noise. One kid was crying, so the Deacon turned on some music and began dancing. The kids soon followed suit and joined him with the dancing. Michael Oliver (of Problem Child 1 & 2) was a guest in that episode. :)

He used to work with children. Not sure if he still does.

Keisha Knight Pullium worked with him and starred in The Cosbys as Rudi when she was just a little girl. Before that she starred in Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon when she was a baby (toddler).

She now plays Miranda on Tyler Perry's House of Payne.

Incidentally, just last year, Sherman Hemsley and Marla Gibbs had reprised their familiar roles as George Jefferson & Frorence Johnston in an ep of House of Payne! :)

wow, that's a surprise i think that nobody would've guess!

well anyway, i know this maybe late and this is somewhat related but they are still a tribute to him and both of them do use sample from this classic theme song from the popular (1975-85) CBS sitcom so see if you can guess on what these two different rap songs they are sampling from.

According to this article, he didn't get radiation or chemotherapy:
http://blackandmarriedwithkids.com/2012/08/medical-examiner-confirms-actor-sherman-hemsleys-cause-of-death/

It does say he was aware of his condition, but it doesn't say why he didn't go for therapy.

Once again, R.I.P. Sherman Hemsley, you have moved on up to the de-luxe apartment in the sky! :rip:

Probably because once Cancer gets to a certain stage, Radiation and Chemo doesn't help. Doctors will tell the patient to let it run it's course.

If there was no chance to help him doctors would not have reccommended it! Look at Tony Scott who just killed himself. He had inoperable brain cancer.

The doctors told Sherman to HELP him! Sherman should've strutted in there doing the George walk!

I agree! That what I think also. He could have had Cancer before and then it probably went into Remission and then when it came back it may have been in a later stage then when it was caught before, It may have been to late to do anything and so he probably decided to just leave with it for the rest of his life. Some peoples do decide live with cancer for the rest of their life after it comes back and decide not to get anymore treatment(Chemo/Radiation surgery)

I have a Aunt who has Colon Cancer, she caught it at stage 3 a back in March but had been sick for a while before that. she had Surgery last month. She has said that if it(Cancer) comes back(Returns) later that she is not going to get any treatment for it and that she will just live with until Death. That could have been the situation that Sherman was in, He has cancer went into Remission and it came back and so he decided just to live with it until death and get any treatment.

You really can't judge anybody until you are in that exact same situation. You don't know what you will think or how you feel or what you will do until you are there in that exact moment.

it was never before revealed that he was even sick!

A friend of mine is in the hospital now because he has esophigal cancer. He had mainly went because he was experiencing pain in one of his legs. It turns out that they later found out that he has cancer in the esophigus.

I was later told that the treatment has stopped. He probably told the docs not to continue, so it sounds like he no longer wants to try to fight it now. :(

Not necessarily, some celebrities that have had cancer or any other serious illness like to keep it a private issue if possible and the only way you find out about it is after their passing. I also seriously doubt that his agent, family or anyone associated with Mr. Hemsley is going to discuss the matter freely with you or anyone else.

Actually, and usually, that is what happens when a famous celeb dies.

It has happen with James Brown, Gary Coleman & Michael Jackson.

When a person is alive, it seems that no one cares much about him or her. But when a person dies, EVERYBODY comes out of the woodwork, to claim a piece of the pie!!!!!!
