She was a bit pervy. I have to say that Myra wasn't my most fav character.

I think she put the camera in steve's glasses because at the time he was staying at the winslows home so she was envy she wanted to make sure he was not sleeping around with laura at night behind her back its obvious he had a huge crush on the girl even if she was a little stuck up at times lol

I never liked Myra, except in the first episode she was introduced.

Myra Monkhouse might just be one of the most under appreciated characters in all of sitcom history... and today we're here to give her what's due.

This may come as a shock to some but I never found her to be attractive. Maybe it was the personality of the character

Myra was probably my favorite female character on this show.
The writers tried their best to make her unsympathetic, but I was always on her side.

To be honest I wouldn't overanalyze hardly anything either Myra or Steve did in the show. Both characters were intentionally written to be over the top stereotypes to be played for laughs.

Or it's most likely the fact that "she" was played by Jaleel White pretending to be a woman!:rolleyes: When the show became obsessed with Steve Urkel and all his stupid crap it wasn't funny anymore!

The fact that she was obsessed with annoying ass, stalking Urkel and kept on chasing after him season after season when it was obvious that he had eyes for Laura was a BIG turn off.

Facts!!!

Michelle Thomas went from playing Theo Huxtable's girlfriend on The Cosby Show to playing Steve Urkel's girlfriend on Family Matters and she knocked both roles out of the park. I greatly enjoyed watching her in both roles.

Her bubbly personality and kind spirit jumped through the tv screen as Myra Monkhouse. Besides being a cutie pie, with beautiful eyes and smile, she was a very talented actress that passed away way too soon at the age of 30 due to stomach cancer. During the last 2-3 seasons of Family Matters she was often in pain when she showed up on the set of Family Matters but she still put on great performances as Myra Monkhouse.

To me, what made her character special was the fact that she had no complaints where Steve was concerned. She was the only one who loved him just the way that he already was.

God bless you always!!!

Not even his parents loved him, but Myra did. :(

Michelle Thomas was 24 years old when she was chasing after a 16 year old Jaleel White on the show (allegedly).

Yeah, that was a bit weird in retrospect.
They were supposed to be the same age on the show, but yeah...

^^^ Sometimes the age of the actors and actresses can't be helped. Whoever makes casting decisions I guess has to focus more on whoever can give the best performances.

But the casting director should also cast in the right age group. A 24-year-old is far too old to be dating a 16-year-old.

^^^ That was only through their characters which is different compared to dating in real life. How much did they have to do with each other in such a way when they weren't focused on their jobs?

God bless you always!!!

They still have to kiss.

Yeah, I don't believe that that casting would have been allowed today.

They still have to kiss.
True, but they had no telling how many pairs of eyes watching them from behind the camera, in other words, zero privacy which only meant no ability for the kiss to go any further.

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. On top of whoever was behind the camera, another set of people to remember are however many made up the studio audience.

Yeah, I don't believe that that casting would have been allowed today.

Things have definitely changed here in the US, at least. Social Justice movements have meant that there have been shifting perceptions of what is okay. Decades ago, a romantic kiss between an adult and a minor was just part of acting. But with people kind of speaking up about bad past experiences in Hollywood, there's a heightened awareness of what makes people (actors, viewers) uncomfortable.

I suppose Sweden already went through these social changes a while ago, although of course the legal ages we've mentioned in this thread aren't a problem there. Then again, I know most Europeans have a different idea of what's "appropriate" sexually.

We have set our legal age at 15 (but you can't get married until you're 18).
But I guess that casting a 16-year-old and a 24-year-old as a couple would still be a bit controversial.

I know a lot of Myra's and Steve's kisses were played more for laughs than anything else. Infact I can't remember a single scene where they had a kiss that was intended to look romantic in nature. I would imagine for the vast majority of their in character kisses their lips never even touched or if they did it was just a quick little peck.

^^^ One thing that I can't blame Myra for was her thoroughness whenever she did give Steve a kiss. We all know that no one else was ever quick to give him one and so I applaud her for giving him all of the love that she thought that he had been denied for so long.
God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. Don't forget that very little came from his own parents too if he ever did get anything out of them at all.

I think I remember several kisses, which I don't feel were played for laughs at all.
They were seldom stort either.

That is true.
It is like the writers wanted us to think that Myra was crazy and mean and had a hard time respecting that Steve wanted to wait with sex.
However, she should be given credit for loving him more than anyone else seemed to do.
And yeah, I must agree with you that his parents were the worst.

Good observation because the Myra character was a "joke" to me. When Laura and Urkel kissed it looked more "serious".
