Bill Asher, director of such legendary early television shows as "I Love Lucy," "Bewitched" and "Gidget," died early today at a Palm Desert board and care facility with his wife, Meredith, by his side.

Asher had lived in La Quinta and Indian Wells since retiring from film and television in 1991. He was 90.

Asher is best remembered as the primary director of “I Love Lucy,” named by TV Guide the second best television comedy ever. But he also was nominated for four Emmy Awards for directing and producing “Bewitched” with his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. He won the Emmy for Best Director of that show in 1966.

Asher also directed such "beach blanket" films as "Beach Party, " "Beach Blanket Bingo” and “How To Stuff A Wild Bikini.”

A memorial service is scheduled Sept. 29 at Desert Springs Church in Palm Desert. Besides his wife, Meredith, Asher is survived by his daughters Liane Sears and Rebecca Asher, sons Brian, Bill Jr., Robert and John, four step-children, nine grandchildren and and eight step-grandchildren.

I just heard this myself a short time ago...:rip: Bill...thank you so much for all that you gave to the TV genre, and for you and Liz for deciding to do Bewitched and bringing all the fantastic people on- and off-screen together...you made so many people happy.

One of my favourite Bewitched episodes is "Samantha's Curious Cravings" in which Samantha develops an unhealthy and un-mortal attraction to food while in the midst of her 2nd pregnancy. In one scene, she is at Shea Stadium with a hot dog in one hand and a phone in the other, calling Darrin to tell him why she was there. To the right of the phone booth, there is a wall which is covered with graffiti. One of the items is a large heart inside of which is written the initials "B.A. + E.M." which stands for "Bill Asher + Elizabeth Montgomery". I thought that it was a clever and touching, if only too brief, reminder of how much they were in love at the time and it's too bad their marriage ended not long after the series did. William Asher worked on some great TV sitcoms and movies and this is another big loss for Hollywood.
