I was thumbing through an issue of Soap Opera Digest and it dawned on me how few soaps are on now, but when I really started to think about it, I was shocked.

I can't believe there are only four soaps left....

1. Young and the Restless
2. Bold and the Beautiful
3. Days of Our Lives
4. General Hospital

Hard to believe that there used to be as many as 14 on at once!

And sadly cancellation rumors abound for GH as well. It has always been a favorite so it is very sad.

GH is at least going to make it till 50. ABC has put out statements about that.

It moves to 2PM EST September 10th though.

I grew up with soaps and I hate they're pretty much gone now. Setting here right now watching an old All My Children on Soapnet.

It really is sad and today I was looking through one of the soap mags and there was a section about the anniversary of One Life To Live. Seemed like a slap in the face for people who were fans of that show. I mean if it's no longer on the air then it's not exactly an anniversary, is it?

I know what you mean Schmoopie. I was a huge OLTL fan and it made me sad to see people posting about the 44th anniversary over on Soap Opera Network (another message board I'm on)

I really wish OLTL was still on. But, at least they moved Todd and John who were my two faves on there. Over to General Hospital. It's not the same though.

14?? What a waste of time!

Did you know even Soapnet is going out of business? I read they are shutting down in a year or 2.

Soaps are just like any other show. The ratings have tanked so they get cancelled!

I thought they had changed Soapnet's format already. I know they were going to change it to Nick Jr or something like that.

I think Soapnet is still there. I saw on the program guide there's a show called "Brothers and Sisters". Is that a Soap?

I know Sopnet is going off the air but I don't know when.

This year would have been the 75anniversary of Guiding Light. Its been off the air for 3 years, so whats there to celebrate. :(

SoapNet is gone in most of the country, but some cable providers still have it while they negotiate the rates. I believe the only three cable providers who have not switched to Disney Junior (the replacement network) are Dish, AT&T, and Charter Communications.

You could celebrate the fact that it's off the air!

I tried watching but never got the allure of daytime soaps. It seemed so fake and you could tell they were in a studio.

I was a huge fan of Dallas though which was a lot different! But not the new one.

Yea very sad. GL was an institution. Even though I had stopped watching it in the late 90's, I still checked over there once in a while. At it's height it was about as good as soaps can get. :(

Soaps are great, I mourn their imminent departure very much, they are just about the best there is.

GH is my favorite right now, Maurice Bernard as Sonny is a fantastic actor.

I used to watch GL with my grandmother all the time growing up. It was one of her favorites along with Y&R and B&B. I hadn't kept up with it completely since, but I do kind of miss it. It is kind of sad to see all of them going off the air. Where else can you get a new episode every single day and the drama and excitement with characters you grow to really like over the years? Very few places for sure. And, stupid talk shows they're replacing them with... what is more interesting to watch people sitting around talking or the drama that takes place on soaps? The soap drama, of course.

Yeah it's such a shame that they are replacing soaps with talk shows and reality shows and so forth. I mean, whether people realize it or not, soaps take a lot of work as far as writing the script, coming up with ideas and taping it. I've never personally been on a soap but I've met a lot of soap actors/actresses and they love their fans b/c they are loyal. Some of the people I've met, I feel like I 'know' them and I feel for them having to find other work.

With all the recent cancellations of some daytime soap operas on network TV, does this mean that more scripted TV shows in primetime will become serialized?

That is not true as much as reality and game shows make more money because they are much cheaper to make. ****ing Reality TV:mad: ! I despise them all!!
