george couldn't think of anything to get his mother for her birthday and it was on a sunday and said that there were no stores open on Sunday. That's understandable for many small cities and towns but this is New York City! The city never sleeps even on a Sunday! They were in Manhattan, how could all the stores be closed on a Sunday?! You can't find anything CLOSED in Manhanttan! You'd thought they were in Mayberry

That's true, even in big cities places may close early on sundays like 5pm but they are still open

The malls and departments stores close at 5pm. But fast food places stay open all day

Well most stores and malls are closed around the world on sundays because of church and most people dont work on sundays they are home with their families, his mother would of been happy if he just gave her some money and took her out to a movie and a dinner she would have been happy with that instead of a dinky gift he was going to give her since he was cheap lol

But in the 70's were there a lot of stores that did not open on Sundays? I remember my mom saying that on Sundays even the grocery stores were closed. Maybe it was just in the south.

Grocery Stores were closed in many areas of the country on Sunday until some time in the '80's. They weren't even open in the evening after 6pm. We were so dependent on Dairy Marts and Seven-Elevens between the '60's and 80's.
Not sure when department stores started being open on Sunday, though.

I lived in NYC during the 70s, and the blue laws in effect at the time did not permit most retail establishments to conduct business on Sunday. Basically, the only businesses that were open were grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations. Restaurants were open, and bars were allowed to open after 10 am.
