I am wracking my brain trying to remembe the name of a tv-movie I once watched and enjoyed very much, and would like to track down and see if it is on DVD. Here's what I remember of it.
I am pretty sure it was in 1990 or perhaps late 1989, I can narrow it down to that time period because I remember which apartment I was living in when I watched it.
It was a 2-hour made for tv movie, possibly a pilot which never turned into a series. It only aired once, I think on a Sunday evening. I do not recall which network.
It was about a detective in New York City in the late 1940's - very much like an old film noir, with crooked cops and a murder to be solved. There was a lot of great attention to period detail with vintage clothes and cars and hairstyles, several old radio programs mentioned and even one scene that was set in the famous lounge called Toots Shor's.
It may have come out after the successful release of the movie Dick Tracy, because I seem to recall some of the scenes and mood were reminsennt of that movie - vivid colors and dark moody sets.
I think the main character's first name was Johnny, and it is possible that the name Johnny was in the title of the movie.
