View Full Version : Ground Beef v. Ground Chicken v. Ground Turkey
RoryGilmore 07-10-2012, 02:28 PM My fiance and I are starting our wedding diet and are trying to be healthier overall neither of us are over 140 pounds and neither of us are anywhere near overweight but we are just trying to be healthier. I've read a lot of different things stating that ground chicken or ground turkey is healthier than ground beef but I buy the 93/7 ground beef and then the turkey is only 90/10 and it just doesn't make sense to me
Any one out there know anything about this type of thing?

I've never heard of this. I'm assuming it's vegetarian by the name.

Janice 07-11-2012, 04:00 PM I eat so little ground beef, that I'm sticking with it. I eat about half a pound of it a month, if that. I eat mostly chicken.
RoryGilmore 07-11-2012, 04:32 PM I wish we ate that little ground beef. I love chicken and could eat it most of the time but my fiance has food allergies and is a very picky eater and so he'll get 4 lbs of ground beef a week

There is something called match meat. It's basically a much healthier version of meat that you can be guilt free about. You can enter your zip code and see where it's sold near you.

OH Nuts! 07-11-2012, 10:52 PM Perhaps you could find ground turkey that is less than 10% - I know I've seen it out there. Turkey tends to be lower in fat than beef. As for beef, anything with the ending -loin will be very low fat ( like sirloin, pork loin etc.)
Some other options for lean high protein: If you like it, broiled fish like flounder, tilapia are extremely lean & super high in protein. As is grilled or boiled shrimp, crab, lobster. Another super high protein dish is an egg white omelette.

The MorningStar veggie burgers are pretty good. I like the spicy black bean veggie burgers. I put a little salsa on them and they are quite tasty. :)

Yeah, those are excellent!
Have you tried the Morningstar Veggie dogs? OMG they taste just like the real thing but with none of the fat, cholesterol, or cruelty of regular hot dogs!

I will have to try these one day. I remember there was a place near me that served veggie dogs and they tasted BETTER than the real thing. And yeah, regular hot dogs gross me out; a pink chemistry lab of everything bad for you, talk about mystery meat. Yecch! Haven't eaten red meat in 3 yrs now. Trying to cut back on poultry too but that one's hard.

I wish fish was an option :( I miss it like no other. But my fiance is allergic so I can't have fish in the house. I do use egg whites a lot in my breakfast

I have also given up dairy products and will drink unsweetened Silk Almond or Coconut milk for cereal.

How can you be vegetarian if you eat fish and chicken? It's good that you're almost there though!
I'm 95% vegetarian and just by coincidence that is what chimapnzees are which are our closest genetic relatives! Some might say the Bonobo but they're 95% vegetarian too! :wave:
Like so many people say you do feel healthier and better overall on a vegetarian diet or almost vegetarian diet! :wave:
Brad Russ 07-18-2012, 04:10 PM I prefer both ground turkey and ground chicken. I use it to make spaghetti, hamburger helper, and anything else that typically calls for ground beef. Far healthier, far less greasy, and tastes much better in my opinion.
