I just saw the first season finale where Frasier and Niles forgot Martin's birthday. But a few seasons later it is said that they're always in competition to get him the best birthday gift.

Ha ha, I never noticed that before but that's funny! I think sometimes these shows think that people won't notice stuff like that! Guess they don't count on people falling in love with the show and watching faithfully. The soaps are notorious for starting story lines and then dropping them (at least OLTL was). I mean how are long time viewers not going to notice if you hint at a big story line and then act like it never happened? But in fairness to the Frasier writers, it's quite possible that they forget that something was mentioned already. I don't know how they keep all those story lines straight!

The season 1 episode "Author Author" has Martin trying to get Niles and Frasier to stop fighting and when they finally stop speaking to each other he tells them a story that starts out "I never had a brother but I had a partner on the force..." But then by season 5's "Beware of Greeks" there's a whole episode about Martin's brother, his wife and Frasier and Niles's cousin.

There's also an early episode where Daphne tells Niles she has never been engaged or even had a serious boyfriend but then by season 4 we have "The Two Mrs Cranes" where her ex-fiance Clive shows up and she says they were engaged for years.

Just a couple of inconsistencies I have noticed. :) I think the writers probably know what they've said before, but they just change things to suit their purposes sometimes. I had a friend who worked in television and she said that the writers on TV shows have a book that they keep all the essential information in so that they can keep consistent with the storylines as the years go by and as writers come and go. I guess if something was only mentioned briefly once, it might be worth changing later if they have a good episode idea. It's fun to look for and find all those inconsistencies, though.

I avoid that episode like the plague. Methinks it was the basis of a backdoor pilot. I don't even consider it as a "Fraser" episode.
