JamesG 07-08-2012, 06:00 PM Ernest Borgnine Dead: Oscar-Winning Actor Dies At Age 95
By CHRISTOPHER WEBER and BOB THOMAS
07/08/12 - AP
Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in Marty in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.
Borgnine, who endeared himself to a generation of Baby Boomers with the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy", first attracted notice in the early 1950s in villain roles, notably as the vicious Fatso Judson, who beat Frank Sinatra to death in From Here to Eternity.
Then came Marty, a low-budget film based on a Paddy Chayefsky television play that starred Rod Steiger. Borgnine played a 34-year-old who fears he is so unattractive he will never find romance. Then, at a dance, he meets a girl with the same fear.
From 1962 to 1966, Borgnine – a Navy vet himself – starred in "McHale's Navy" as the commander of a World War II PT boat with a crew of misfits and malcontents. Obviously patterned after Phil Silvers' popular Sgt. Bilko, McHale was a con artist forever tricking his superior, Capt. Binghamton, played by the late Joe Flynn.
The cast took the show to the big screen in 1964 with a "McHale's Navy" movie.

Some generic voice actor? I hate generic voice actors.
Larenz09 07-09-2012, 06:22 AM First it was Andy, now Earnest!!
What is renal failure? Anyone know what it is?
I remember when Borgnine starred in the horror movie; Willard. He was "attacked & killed" by the rats.
He was very well-known by the space between his two front teeth.
R.I.P., Earnest. You will be missed by all

The term "renal" relates to the kidneys.

They could have just said kidney failure. I'd have known.
Ernest Borgnine was a great actor who excelled in many different types of roles in the movies before he gained long-overdue stardom in "McHale's Navy". His performance in "Marty" not only won him an Oscar but also indirectly played a factor in the quiz-show scandals of the late 50s. (It was "Marty" which Herbert Stempel was supposed to have answered but purposely missed on to allow Charles van Doren to beat him on the $64,000 Question.)
"McHale's Navy" is one of the most underrated sitcoms of the 1960s, often getting lost in comparison with "The Phil Silvers Show" which it tries to pattern itself after, as well as the military comedies that followed it, like "Hogan's Heroes" and "MASH". Besides Borgnine, the show has a stellar supporting cast, and some of the dialogue that is exchanged between them is often hilarious, as is the great physical comedy displayed by Tim Conway, usually with Joe Flynn as his victim. Through it all, Capt. McHale was a calm voice in the stormy seas and though his methods weren't always by the book, we loved him anyway.
Goodbye Ernest. Your loyal and devoted crew salutes you with love and respect for a great career and a long and happy life. You will be greatly missed.

1960'sTVfan 07-15-2012, 12:35 PM R.I.P. Ernest Borgnine. As with all military sitcoms with the exception of Gomer Pyle, I could never get into McHale's Navy. The acting is not the problem, but the writing is bad, the episodes are just a bunch of silly nonsense. But as a fan of old TV shows, if given a choice to watch an episode of any current sitcom or an episode of McHale's Navy, I'll choose McHale's Navy.
One comment about Ernest Borgnine, I've always thought he was miscast in McHale's Navy. He was known as a dramatic actor in serious dramatic movies, and here he was cast as one of the goofballs in McHale's Navy. It just didn't fit.

I liked Gomer Pyle; U.S.M.C. much better!! :)

Gomer Pyle is a funny show, Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton worked great together. A few episodes are snoozers but for the most part the writing is good. One other military themed sitcom that I somewhat enjoy is F Troop, but it's not near as good a show as Gomer Pyle is.

Yeah, I remember F Troop as well.
Also, there was M*A*S*H*, which I didn't particularly care for. A hospital show; Trappr John; MD was a spin-off from this show. It starred Gregory Harrison.

And Hogan's Heroes and Operation Petticoat which, like McHale's Navy, were set during World War II.

Didn't Goldie Hawn also do a military sitcom; Private Benjiman? Or was that a comedy movie?

Goldie Hawn was in the movie---and she was great in it. The TV sitcom version was with another actress and wasn't on for very long.
The best military sitcom of all that I've seen is "The Phil Silvers Show". That show was funny from start to finish. Phil Silvers was a great actor but remains very under-appreciated today, much like Ernest Borgnine, because their series don't get shown very often and that's too bad.

Yes, I was thinking about The Phil Silver Shows (Sgt. Bilko) after I posted that. Also, C.P.O. Sharkey with Don Rickles. I had forgotten about Private Benjamin, though I remember it well. Great movie, not so great sitcom.

Lorna Patterson played Pvt Benjamin in the TV series.
Also, another recent death with a McHale's Navy connection. Country music singer Kitty Wells passed away yesterday. She's the mother of John Wright who played Willy Moss on the series.

MrCleveland 07-18-2012, 05:15 PM I wonder if Tim Conway did a eulogy for Borgnine?
He also had a scene in "Baseketball" featuring Trey Parker and Matt Stone as well as this scene in "Home Improvement"....

Sgt. Bilko is another military themed sitcom I could never get into, to me it's just a bunch of silliness and nonsense, really poor writing. Nat Hiken's other series Car 54 is the same type of foolishness, just using policemen instead of military personnel. Season 1 of Bilko came out on DVD, but sales were low and CBS the distributor hasn't made plans to release more seasons. I'm not surprised.
