In the episode "Vienna Waits," Alex and Elaine go for "a walk." Was that to allude that they hooked up in Europe?

For Alex's sake, I hope so! ;)

I've alway assumed that they hooked up in that episode. Which seems pretty bold for a sitcom in the early 80s.

They definitely hooked up. Near the end of the episode Elaine tells Alex that their friendship is strong enough to survive 1 night of love. I forget where I read it, but this episode was often referred to as the "Alex Gets Laid" episode.

Really? Wow, I never heard that.

Yep, they definitely hooked up. The sad thing is that this incident was never referred to again or built upon. I didn't want them to be a couple, per se, but I hoped if they ever had a final episode (which they never did or will) it would have been implied that Alex and Elaine would have a future together.

Didn't they hook up in real life too?

Alex and Elaine were definitely soulmates - and I hope that they ended up together when the show ended.

Yes. Actually, Marilu Henner and Tony Danza had a fling when the show was just getting under way but ended it before the first episode aired (they have since remained lifelong good friends). Then Marilu had a hot and heavy affair with Judd Hirsch, but it didn't last long. She has since remained good friends with him throughout the years, too. She went into quite a bit of detail about it in her 1994 memoir, By All Means Keep On Moving.

They probably should have married them on the final show.

I think so, too. What did they have to lose?

Yeah, I remember now it was mentioned in the book Taxi: The Official Fans Guide in the episode guide section. That book has a lot of interesting info I never knew about before. Definitely worth reading if you can find it.

I remember a part in that book where she mentioned she was on a date with Judd and some woman walked up to him and yelled at him and slapped him hard in the face.

It was kind of mentioned it in the Season 5 episode Scenskees From A Marriage. Simka says to Elaine, "I was wondering about you and Alex... did you?" and Elaine stammers and says "Simka... to tell you the truth I'd say no no matter what the truth was."

I do wish that there had been some mention of it between Alex and Elaine. It's a perfect event to build a story off of. I like to think that they would have eventually gotten together had the show gone on.

The writers were correct NOT to make their one night of love a vague
backdrop to their friendship. Otherwise too many episodes would have
been devoted to the ups and downs of their pairing and that certainly
would have changed the entire chemistry of "Taxi".
