Just the mother dexter wedding episode. It was funny because she came out of her house just like Rhoda with the wedding dress on and instead of running through the streets like Rhoda, at her age she just waved down a cab=LOL
And When Phyllis made a reference to Rhoda I thought the crowd would laugh a lot louder but they didn't like they didn't know who Rhoda was
Retro4Life 07-02-2012, 07:31 PM I thought that Mother Dexter was actually her late husband's grandmother??

I honestly can't remember.

I think he is saying that because of her age she should have been "Grandmother Dexter" instead of "Mother Dexter"
Brian Damage 07-02-2012, 09:54 PM Are all 2 seasons on Youtube Sol?
Retro4Life 07-02-2012, 09:58 PM From wikipedia...yep, I looked it up, ;)
In a late 1976 episode, Jonathan's cranky and outspoken Mother Dexter (Judith Lowry), Phyllis' main nemesis, married Arthur Lanson (Burt Mustin); both Lowry and Mustin died within a month of the episode's airing. CBS moved both Rhoda and Phyllis to Sunday nights at 8:00 P.M. and 8:30 P.M., respectively. During this time, actress Jane Rose (who played Audrey Dexter) took ill. These events put Phyllis' home life in flux, which necessitated more new story lines. Daughter Bess's role became more prominent and she found romance with Mark Valenti (played by Craig Wasson), the nephew of Phyllis' boss, and they later married.

Yea she was Jonathan's mother. They just called her Mother Dexter. I think Phyllis had too many old people on the show. Nobody could stay healthy. lol

Looks like it's just season 2 eps
McGillicuddy 07-02-2012, 10:20 PM Mother Dexter was Jonathan's mother; Jonathan was Audrey's second husband, and would have been Lars' step-father; so Mother Dexter was not Lars' grandmother, nor was she Bess' great-grandmother.
By the way, Audrey was Lars' mother, Phyllis' mother-in-law, and Bess' grandma. I don't know if Audrey's first husband (which would be Lars' father) was ever refered to by name.

Yes, Audrey referred to him as 'Gunnar' several times on the show! Oh, and I seem to recall Phyllis talking about her in-laws visiting and, specifically, her father-in-law getting misty eyed over a Volvo commercial and it may have been as late as early 1975- which means that in a matter of months, Audrey was widowed and remarried and had to bury her only child. Yet she seemed astonishingly chipper!
McGillicuddy 07-03-2012, 11:30 PM Yes, I always thought it was strange that Audrey never seemed mournful of her own son's death, even at his funeral!
Here is the relationship of Phyllis Lindstrom and Mother "Sally" Dexter:
Mother Dexter is Phyllis' step-grandmother in-law! And this makes Arthur Lansen (Mother Dexter's husband), Phyllis' step-step-grandfather-in-law and Bess' step-step-great-grandfather! I think I just confused myself!

Now you've got my head spinning. I think you're correct, though.

Something that always confused me is that on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, we never saw Lars, but whenever Phyllis quoted something he had said, it was with a Swedish accent. So we have to assume Lars was Swedish. But his mother does not have a Swedish accent and seems very much American. So how could Lars have ended up with a Swedish accent? Did Audrey ever live in Sweden?

Just more in- continuity
scotsguy 07-29-2013, 04:35 PM I think it was Lars' father who was Swedish,Audrey mentions him on "Phyllis" as Gunar.
Although Phyllis impersonates Lars on MTM with a Swedish accent, when a supposed Medium comes to Joanthan and Audrey's and pretends to be in communication with Lars, when he speaks in a Swedish accent,Phyllis says, that Lars doesn't speak like that!
Chrisothebigc 11-01-2013, 08:30 PM Good point! That actually kind of ticked me off! Such is the land of television. In the second eo of PHYLLIS (the VERY funny Bess, Is You A Woman Now? ), Phyllis even imitates Lars with an accent! Out of continuity, Bess tells Julie that Lars taught Bess (and Phyllis!) the facts of life...when we all know Mary had that talk with Bess (sort of) in the MTMS ep Bess, You Is A Woman Now! The very show the title-play came from! Sheesh!

That was the summer I received the Rhoda DVD's and was curious about Phyllis.
vacater 12-21-2016, 11:13 PM Jane Rose must have gotten better, because she appeared on a Rhoda episode 2 years later in season 5
