....ensemble sitcom format! He said, something to the fact that the ensemble format hurts the show sometimes because it hurts interacting relationships with other cast members and you become caricatures...

I disagree. Along with WKRP and Corner Gas, Barney Miller is a top notch ensemble comedy. Some shows work better with 1 or 2 stars leading but not this one.

I agree 100%

I know the name of the show was Barney Miller and the original premise of the show revolved around him and his work and home life, but the ensemble really paid off on this show.

Interesting article/interview with Max Gail. I had no idea about his impressive educational and musical background. Max Gail, the actor is so not "Wojo". Max Gail the person, the professional actor and activist, artist has obviously thought about many things from child-rearing to the environment, the role of schools to the effects on children of television --his bread and butter at the time.

I don't make it a habit to delve too much into actors' personal lives or read too many interviews. So many "interviews" today either on print or on talk shows remain on the "safe" side and are not that revealing.

Thank you for posting a thirty year newspaper article. It's a gem and the ideas are just as relevant today as it was back then!:)

The Google News Archives are a treasure trove of old newspaper articles, especially if you happen to be looking for info about the TV shows of yore. :D

I think the characters interacting well together and not becoming charactures is more a function of good writing than of format. And on Barney Miller that had very good writers!
