I just found this article about new forensic testing done on the body of the unidentified woman found in Lake Panasoffkee in 1971, featured on Unsolved Mysteries.

I was surprised at this one part, which gives hope that she will be identified:

Forensic science then seemed to indicate she might be American Indian. But now, based on high lead content in her teeth, Kamenov believes she is from a town 60 miles southeast of Athens, Greece, called Lavrion.

Athens, Greece? Wow, if she really originated from another continent, that would go along towards explaining why she's unclaimed for so long.

Given that they theorized she had given birth to a child at one point, I'm now visualizing a scenario where she decides to flee her home country after an unplanned pregnancy and just happened to run into the wrong person shortly after arriving in America. She could have had a family in Greece searching for her who may not have even been aware she left the country, and it's not like they would have had many resources for checking into unclaimed Jane Does in the U.S. in 1971.

Incredible, especially since this case was rerun a few weeks ago IIRC. Considering the extraordinary amount of work that went into the artists reconstructing what she looked like, this could explain a lot. I'd be interested in how they concluded from the amount of lead in her fillings that she was from somewhere in Greece. I wonder if that also could narrow down the surgeons who could've operated on her for her ankle injury? Perhaps Grecian dental records?

Identifying her is still only half the battle. If they manage to identify her, maybe they can figure out if she was traveling with a male companion who could be or know of the murderer.

Don't think that would ever happen. A project like that would probably generate the single largest controversy over civil liberties, body control, privacy, etc. that has ever been seen. I bet the closest that could be had would be some sort of voluntary project where people could submit their DNA at their discretion. It's an amazingly powerful thought - to think that we now have the technology to do that - but rife with danger, too.

Being a foreigner, she may have been targeted for some kind of crime : ( That's a potential theory. Maybe she had only been in the U.S. for a short time and didn't speak fluent English or was too trusting. And no one could figure out who she was or make the connection because they didn't know her.

Maybe missing persons records would turn up hits if she'd been here long enough for neighbors/friends to note that she'd gone missing and the key work in the records would be that she was "Greek." But since it's been so longs and records may not have been so well-kept (or she didn't know anyone who put in a report) then perhaps this possibility is less likely.

I really hope the U.S. is allowed to retrieve such missing persons records if LE requests them. It's in the interest of a Greek citizen so I would hope so. Also, she had a child at one time. Where is that child? Is he/she still alive? Somewhere that child may be wondering where the mother is. In any case, Little Miss Panasoffkee was a human being who deserves to be not only identified, but her murderer brought to justice.

Not in this case because they don't know whose records to look for.

Exactly. Those dentists have most likely long retired but who knows? I suppose it is possible.

I agree, CD. The geographic pinpointing is suuuuper specific. I was just looking for information about how they might have figured this out and found several sources like this article (http://library-resources.cqu.edu.au/JFS/PDF/vol_42/iss_5/JFS425970787.pdf) that discuss using lead isotopes (which are geographically specific) found in teeth to identify geographic origin. Neat!

wow! i just stumbled across this thread and after looking at the composite photo, she can definitely pass for being Greek! I have similar features, long dark hair with strong facial features; people always comment on my cheekbones. My family comes from Sparta, Greece. Lavrio is known for their silver mining and in the middle of the town, they have a port. It's not as super touristy as the other port cities, like Rafina and Piraeus. It's about a 30 min drive to Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport.

The Tarpon Springs/Clearwater area of Florida is commonly known to have a pretty large Greek population. I actually found another article from the Tampa Bay Times that gives more details about this case.

I have a lot of friends from Greece and so I have shared the links via my twitter and facebook...hopefully someone, somewhere in Greece can identify this woman. It honestly breaks my heart. I hope this family can find closure.

Well, the city has less than 10k residents. Given the fact that silver, cadmium, lead and manganese were all mined there, I understand how they could isolate this as where she came from based on the isotope testing. Unfortunately, the city is also on the verge of bankruptcy, so I doubt they can spare police to do any canvassing. I do hope they at least put LMP's picture in the local newspaper. I'd venture to guess someone there still remembers her.

That was my original comment i posted a while back on several threads. They have not made a 100% match yet that Little Miss P was Konstantina, the classmate whom Miss Vasiliki thought the composite photo looked like.

However what new news that I have on this case is that I came across another website called Hellbeasts and the admin, Cleo recreates human-like photos from the skulls of these identified does and their composite photos.. i have commented in that thread as well.. and with the skull i found from the UM original broadcast Cleo recreated what Little Miss P may have looked like in real life..
