View Full Version : Ted Bessell was THE boy next door MichaelKeith 06-27-2012, 03:06 PM Ted Bessell was a good looking guy and I can only imagine that a lot of young women fell in love with him during the first run of this show back in the 60s. He and Ann make a very cute couple. comedyfreak 06-28-2012, 03:49 AM They were great together. OH Nuts! 06-28-2012, 09:43 AM Sadly, I was too young (10-11) to really appreciate the show when it initially aired. But watching it as an adult I JUST LOVE it. Ann is adorable and charming in her sometimes naive and Lucy-esque ways. And yes, if ever there were a knight in shining armor it's Don - a real sweetie pie (in a guy way) - chivalrous to the max. When I watched it as a kid I thought he was drippy - but what did I know -as a snotty little 10 yr old. The only flaw was the WAAAAY overdone Lou as the overprotective dad who treated Don like some kind of predator. IMHO Mr. Marie needed a major chill pill. He should have gotten down on his knees his daughter had a b/f like Don. And Don could be kind of goofy once in a while - which just made him more endearing. I've been super busy with work so I've watched very little TV, outside of the news, in the last month. All of this is making me think it's high time to crack out my That Girl DVDs. Sometimes, I need that little reminder about how lovely a show is -and T.G. certainly fits into that category. I WILL watch an ep tonight! Great thread MichaelKeith. MichaelKeith 06-29-2012, 01:30 PM Thank you, OH Nuts! I had just got to thinking how if I had a daughter Hollinger is the type of guy I'd want her to be with. OH Nuts! 06-29-2012, 11:58 PM Thank you, OH Nuts! I had just got to thinking how if I had a daughter Hollinger is the type of guy I'd want her to be with. I totally agree. Don is as nice as they come. biffbronson 06-30-2012, 12:13 AM Casting Ted in that role was a superb move. I'm sort of in the same mode as Oh Nuts! in that I didn't really think too much of him when I watched the series as a kid. But as I watch now, I see over and over that Ted's contribution to the show was stellar. OH Nuts! 06-30-2012, 12:27 AM Casting Ted in that role was a superb move. But as I watch now, I see over and over that Ted's contribution to the show was stellar. Yes, absolutely Ted did a great job on the show even though IMO Marlo was the magic that made T.G. sparkle. Don Hollinger had to be the nicest TV b /f ever. Can't think of anyone who came close. Can you? Schmoopie 07-04-2012, 04:09 AM I've only watched a few episodes of That Girl (recently anyway) and I agree that Ted is really cute. They made a cute couple. I usually only catch this show on Sunday afternoons, but the ones I've seen are awesome. I just love Marlo Thomas on this show. She was so beautiful! I love her hair as well! Yeah, I agree - her flip hair-do was a killer. Coffeecup 10-28-2012, 06:23 PM Yeah if only life was that way. Enjoying life with someone you love. After 5 years of knowing him, I'd be married. I did think when I saw the show as a 9 year old and now decades later, Ann's father was more concerned about her than her mother. D-Dey 11-17-2012, 12:07 AM I forget where I read this, but Tracey Ullman used to tease him over this when he was directing episodes of "Tracey Takes On..." D-Dey 12-09-2012, 02:25 PM ^ I was wrong. It was The Tracey Ullman Show. Here's the link. http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20119943,00.html Bonniegirl 10-07-2014, 11:03 PM As a little girl watching I wanted to grow up and have a nice boyfriend just like Don! merlinjones 02-07-2020, 04:34 AM Don Hollinger had to be the nicest TV b /f ever. Can't think of anyone who came close. Can you? Steve Elliot (Petticoat Junction)? Scotty (Donna Reed)? Richard (Patty Duke)? Jeremy Bolt (Here Come the Brides)? stevea 02-07-2020, 08:14 AM I could imagine Mary marrying Scotty later. And Alex would view him as "safe." Scotty was nice, but I remember an episode where he and Mary quarreled when he tried to teach her to drive. Richard was nice but he was kinda goofy. merlinjones 02-07-2020, 11:16 AM I think Mary married Scotty too - loved the actor, he was so appealing! How about Steve Trevor (Wonder Woman - especially in WWII)? Bonniegirl 02-07-2020, 02:07 PM Steve Elliot (Petticoat Junction)? Scotty (Donna Reed)? Richard (Patty Duke)? Jeremy Bolt (Here Come the Brides)? He wasn't casted as a boyfriend character but as a Son & a Brother , but I always thought Wally Cleaver (Leave it to Beaver) would make a great boyfriend! ;) Bonniegirl 02-07-2020, 02:10 PM Yeah, I agree - her flip hair-do was a killer. I love her hair do!! So popular back than and her hair was so pretty, so dark and thick ! :) OH Nuts! 02-07-2020, 03:11 PM I love her hair do!! So popular back than and her hair was so pretty, so dark and thick ! :) I adore this show! When I was sick at home this Tues. & Weds. I watched back-to-back eps on Antenna. stevea 02-07-2020, 10:50 PM When I see her now, my first thought is, wow, Marlo still looks good. I find myself really enjoying the episodes, too. I'd forgotten how well written this show is. I have the DVD sets, but they're plagued with out-of-sync audio problems. Another problem Shout will never correct. 1960'sTVfan 02-07-2020, 11:04 PM When I see her now, my first thought is, wow, Marlo still looks good. I find myself really enjoying the episodes, too. I'd forgotten how well written this show is. I have the DVD sets, but they're plagued with out-of-sync audio problems. Another problem Shout will never correct. That's interesting, I haven't noticed any out-of-sync audio on the DVD's but will have to pay closer attention the next time I watch some episodes. There's one episode that's edited, "Super Reporter" from season 5 is missing the tag scene at the end. A few other episodes from seasons 3-5 have suspiciously short run times but I don't know for sure if any of those are edited or not. stevea 02-07-2020, 11:14 PM ISTR some talk about "Super Reporter" in another thread a long time ago. Maybe Antenna will have the missing scene. Re the audio sync maybe I just have defective DVDs, but it sure is annoying. TV Guy 02-07-2020, 11:42 PM Steve Elliott was the worst - so controlling. He looked like somebody’s dad with his button down sweaters. And he sounded like somebody’s dad with all that old-timey singing. Petticoat Junction tanked when he showed up. TV Guy 02-07-2020, 11:44 PM When I see her now, my first thought is, wow, Marlo still looks good. I think she looks terrible with her unnecessary surgery. Completely unnatural. She looked great 10 years ago, but couldn’t leave it alone. Bonniegirl 02-07-2020, 11:50 PM Steve Elliott was the worst - so controlling. He looked like somebody’s dad with his button down sweaters. And he sounded like somebody’s dad with all that old-timey singing. Petticoat Junction tanked when he showed up. NO !! I disagree ! Steve was hot !:) He was the stereotypical Husband of the day, my Dad was like that, making the money, ruling the roost !! ;) I loved his singing !And Steve, Mike Minor and Betty Jo, Linda Kay Henning were really a couple in real life ! Met on the set of PJ, and ended up getting married , so their onscreen romance/ chemistry was real!! ;) Bonniegirl 02-08-2020, 12:03 AM When I see her now, my first thought is, wow, Marlo still looks good. Another problem Shout will never correct. When I see her now on the St. Jude's hospital commercials I think she looks completely different than on her days on That Girl , not just because of age , just very different ! :eek:I thought that even when she had a recurring role as Rachel's Mom on Friends! If I didn't know that was Marlo Thomas ( besides the distinct voice) by her looks I wouldn't even know that was her! Obviously her hair color is lightened, but seems like her eye color and skin tone has lightened over the years? ;) I'm not saying she looks bad, just completely different! ;) Hazel Anyday 02-08-2020, 12:52 AM Now That Girl is another favorite of mine. I watched this one too when I was a kid when it was first on ABC. But as for problems with the Shout DVDs all mine played perfectly, I have all the seasons & don't recall any problems with them. The color on these sets is really beautiful. I had recorded this show way back when the USA cable network used to show it and also when the old WOR Superstation used to show it but the color was always sort of faded out and even purple and greenish on some episodes. So when I saw the Shout DVDs it was a real thrill to see these shows as they looked back in the '60's nice and colorful. As for That Girl's looks today, well I think she's gone to the plastic surgeon one too many times. Why lady stars from yesteryear just can't age naturally is beyond me. When they get those awful giant blown up Duck Lips and have their mouths stretched from ear to ear it just looks bizarre. Would a few wrinkles be so awful compared to turning your face into a horror scene. And the strange thing these ladies keep doing it to themselves again no matter how many others look horrible now they keep doing it to themselves too. Suzanne Sommers, Goldie Hawn, Loretta Swit, Cher, and countless others that I don't wish to conjure up in my brain all look HORRIBLE. Bring back a few wrinkles and mostly you'd look like yourselves instead of strange masked monsters. TV Guy 02-16-2020, 09:43 PM And Steve, Mike Minor and Betty Jo, Linda Kay Henning were really a couple in real life ! Met on the set of PJ, and ended up getting married , so their onscreen romance/ chemistry was real!! ;) They got divorced, too. I like to think that Betty Jo dumped his ass on the show as well. She was way more interesting before he “tamed” her. TV Guy 02-16-2020, 09:45 PM Why lady stars from yesteryear just can't age naturally is beyond me. Bonniegirl 02-17-2020, 12:37 AM I saw a couple of eps. of That girl on Friday , Valentines day , apparently there was a marathon which I'm surprised nobody made any posts about here as a heads up!! ?? I was just lucky to have been able to catch a couple of eps. at the tail end of the marathon!;);) And also a couple of eps. on late Saturday afternoon, cool! I guess they show TG on Saturday afternoons regularly? ;) I LOVE this show!!! Such a really cute, cool show, just like I remember from watching it years ago!!:) And Donald is SO CUTE, such a wonderful, great boyfriend!:) Just like I remembered , he was just what us little girls watching back than wanted in a boyfriend, and he still fits the bill!! :) And Ann is darling, a really nice, pretty girl!!!:) |
