View Full Version : Lester was one of TVs most underrated Tv dad
GARFIELDKOOL 06-23-2012, 10:56 PM He was in a secondary role to Mary/Marla Gibbs. But he would get my vote for dad of the year. He was so understanding, gave in to Brenda when Mary would not, he didn't want drama, he just brought in the bread and raised his family. You hardley see him get angry, he saw some things where Mary did not, he was laid back, but wasn't no pushover. I felt Mary underminded a lot of his thoughts and decisions. Lester was the man!
Mr. Television 06-24-2012, 05:10 AM I agree. Lester was one of the best tv dads. He probably has been overlooked all these years because of the reasons that you stated. Also he was the lone man in a show full of outspoken women. I guess it was easy to overlook him.

Back in the day, I use to compare him and James Evans. I use to call Lester a wimp compared to James. But looking back at the show nowadays, he would give James a LOT of comp.
James is still my man, but Lester had advantages like temper. That's the biggest advantage Lester could have. That coolness is what makes Lester.......he doesn't need to be angry! That coolness could make James and his temper look like a fool! LOL
catlover79 06-24-2012, 01:56 PM I agree - and Hal Williams is one of the most underrated actors ever, period!!!

Well, you know something Lester wasn't always the lone man on the show. There was also Calvin, Pearl's grandson.

Yea but he wasn't a man yet. lol And I know there were a few male characters that came on during the last couple of seasons.
GARFIELDKOOL 06-24-2012, 03:59 PM Not only that, I never saw Calvin as a character who developed in the five years the show was on.

Another reason why I like Lester is that he is a diehard Redskin fan.........seriously just a coincidence! He's cool even if he was a Cowboy fan!

Yeah, I remember that episode where he and Mary went to the Redskins game. I just can't remember what the plotline was.

Mary didn't know the game of football, she wanted to go to see what the big deal was in person or something like that.
BTW Rollo from sanford and son was a fan in the audience who had a one line speaking part.

OK, thanks. I love that "Rollo" was there, since "Grady" played Mary's dad, and of course, Hal Williams had played "Smitty"!!

Every 227 ep I seen Lester was overshadowed by Mary, Rose, and Sandra so i'm not sure what eps you are talking about:lol:

227 had a lot of Norman Lear holdovers especially from Sanford and Son. I see Donna had a bit of a recurring role as some snobby church woman. Aunt Esther made one guest appearance as a woman who was standing in line in front of Mary buying lotto.

That's my whole point. It was such a female dominated show to the point where you has a strong TV dad who went unrecognized.

I barely recognized him on the show
TVFactFan 06-26-2012, 05:26 PM Even the episode when Sherman Hemsley made a guest appearance and was dancing with Mary and sandra and rose
Lester was in the background...................watching:lol:

When I watched this back in the day that was my thoughts too. But I've been watching it now on the Centric network(don't know if you get that channel) but Lester definitely has a presence.

Yes, his dance scene with Mary, Rose, and Sandra was classic. I actually think that was his best dance scene. ENJOY MONIKA!!!!
