A classic hard rock band that is one of the best-selling groups of all time has surfaced as a top contender to headline the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, NBC Sports reports.
The band is Van Halen, a veteran group that would continue the NFL’s post-“wardrobe malfunction” tradition of hiring older rockers for the annual showcase.
Van Halen has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide, including more than 56 million in the U.S. alone, earning a place among the 20 best-selling bands and artists of all time.
Guitarist Eddie Van Halen hinted at the booking, telling USA Today, "In November, we'll hit Japan and in the new year, we'll possibly do something special, but I can't talk about it."
One thing might help the band appeal to younger members of the audience: The group now also includes Eddie's 21-year-old son Wolfgang on bass. Wolfgang’s mom is Valerie Bertinelli of TV Land's "Hot in Cleveland.”
Super Bowl XLVII will be held in the New Orleans Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Feb. 3, 2013. It's the Super Bowl’s first time back in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina.
CBS will broadcast the game.
