The offers did not coming pouring in for Kiefer Sutherland when 24 ended its eight-season run in 2010.

Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's drama actors roundtable, the Emmy winner says he didn't have that many choices once his regular paycheck of nearly a decade came to an end.

"I didn't actually," he says. "I was quite surprised by that."

And Sutherland knew that TV was where he wanted to stay -- but he didn't think he would be drawn back just two years later.

"I hadn't planned on doing another show as quickly as I did," he says. "24 was the first time I had a real job. It was the first time in my life where every three months I wasn't panicked to death about how I was going to feed my kids."

By the time Touch came around, Sutherland notes that his working relationship with Fox during 24 was enough to return to the network.

"Fox never edited anything," he says. "Except their news."
