View Full Version : TNT's "Dallas" reboot is cheesier than ever

"The new 'Dallas' is more ridiculous, campier, more preposterous and so totally over the top that it’s skirting insanity," says Linda Stasi. "And those are only a few of the reasons to love this show. Another big reason, of course, is that instead of reinventing the rig, the producers decided to grease the old girl up, give her a good tune-up and get her back up with the old operators still pulling the levers. But they are, of course, accompanied by young, sexy things looking (of course, again) to knock the geezers off so they can reinvent the rig."
"Dallas" is terrible: It's not a guilty pleasure, it's pandering of the lowest kind (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/dallas-tv-review-jesse-metcalfe-335925)
"Dallas" will wear you down and pull you in (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/06/13/DDSA1P04OO.DTL) // It can't compete with the original (http://entertainment.time.com/2012/06/13/tv-tonight-dallas/)

mets82 06-14-2012, 12:07 AM I dont know where these people got there degrees or jobs or whatever because they are way off. I thought Dallas was very good tonight. Some of the shows now can learn based on this new Dallas on how to write and cast.
70s show watcher 06-14-2012, 02:36 AM i thought it was even better than the last 2 reunion movies from 1996 and 98 it was alot of fun seeing some icons of my childhood again
catlover79 06-14-2012, 04:02 AM When does Cliff Barnes finally show up? I heard that Ken Kercheval has signed on to make some guest appearances.
MickeyMac 06-14-2012, 03:10 PM I was at work so I missed it. Hopefully I can catch it another time.

Good question. Also Charlene Tilton and Steve Kanaly are supposed to do guest appearances as well. Wonder when they all will show up.

Charlene and Steve were on last night but they only had cameos.

I wished Ray and Lucy have more lines and more to do.
The moment Bobby told them that he was selling Southfork, Lucy's face drop!
Once Bobby and Chris walked away, we could have get the scene between Ray and Lucy talking about that.
Better yet, Bobby should have ask Ray about his OTHER son with Jenna Wade. After all, Ray adopted his son!

It seems like it. And I sure do hope so!

I saw Charlene on some show a few years ago and she looked awful.
It is kinda cool Dallas is back but it won't last. The world is VERY different from the "Who shot J.R." days.
Like Jay Leno said you'll never have a show that big again!

It'll never be as big as it was. They aired on a Friday night and they were the #1 show in the country. During the summer of 1980, The whole country was caught up in Who Shot Jr. No show is like that anymore. Even American Idol has never come close to the popularity that Dallas had.

It was the #1 show on cable. I'm sure network TV had bigger shows than J.R. at 100 years old!

Yup - I mean you had only three networks, no social media, etc. back in those days. We'll never see the likes of those ratings again. That said, Dallas has remained VERY popular in syndication and on DVD, so this revamp just might work. We'll see.

I'm talking about the original show, not this one.

I know. I laugh at some people who say that young people have never seen it because it's never been on. For a prime-time soap opera, it's done pretty well in syndication. It's been syndicated alot more than the other 3 major soaps of that era. Just off the top of my head, I remember it ran on TNT, TNN and Soap Net for years. It also ran in local syndication. I know one of my locals reran the show for 2 years when it first started in syndication.
catlover79 06-17-2012, 01:54 AM Not too shabby!! I was born the year after the show debuted, but since it ran for so long on primetime, I remember my parents watching it. I was in the living room with them, not really paying much attention but probably staying in the room because Dukes of Hazzard had just been on.
I do have a vivid memory of the show in primetime - Sue Ellen smacking JR across the face. Yeah, which time, right?

Sue Ellen did that at least once every year!
hawkeye123 06-17-2012, 04:07 AM I have still to this day, never seen a episode of Dallas.I am curious though.

You're the same age as John Ross.

Why didn't they get the original John Ross to play his part as an adult?
His name was Om Puri or whatever right?

Omri Katz. He reprised the role in the first Dallas reunion movie in 1996, but he seems to have vanished from the show biz radar since then.

Maybe Omri Katz could show up at the end of a future episode and when someone asks him who he is, he replies, "I'm the real John Ross Ewing."

Very soap opera-ish. I like that idea.

Good one!
catlover79 06-17-2012, 05:55 PM The new John Ross, Josh Henderson, is actually 5 years younger than Omri Katz, thus probably de-aging the character as well.
There sure are a lot of Desperate Housewives connections to this revamp, huh? Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe (Christopher), Brenda Strong (Ann)...not to mention that Nicollette Sheridan was a major player in Knots Landing, the Dallas spinoff.

Then Bobby dies of cancer and comes back from the dead...AGAIN!
catlover79 06-17-2012, 11:48 PM Is Nicollette Sheridan on the new Dallas?
No, she's not. I phrased that badly. What I meant was that she has so many connections to both Dallas and Desperate Housewives.

OK, thanks. That really WOULD have been novel, if she'd have ended up on Dallas playing Paige again! :)

THAT would be indeed novel. It'll probably never happen, but it's fun to imagine all the same. :D

catlover79 06-18-2012, 12:23 AM Heck, it will be hard enough to get Gary and Val, given how the "Dream Season" of Dallas totally screwed up Knots Landing.

Yeah, my very strong guess is that those characters won't be appearing on the show at all, unfortunately. They'd either have to deal with the Bobby question (difficult, at best) or just ignore it altogether, which would make fans cry foul in terms of continuity.
They really messed up when they came up with that horrible dream explanation, and seems like they're STILL paying for it to this day!
Mr. Television 06-18-2012, 12:29 AM Bring Greg Sumner over with her. He and JR could go at it. :D

Who could've guessed that fans would still be debating this over 25+ years later???

I was looking for actors from Dallas on there one day and was surprised that so many of them use twitter. I also found Morgan Brittany, Audrey Landers, Charlene Tilton and of course Patrick, Linda, and Larry.
catlover79 06-19-2012, 04:36 PM Awesome. :D
Jericho-79 06-19-2012, 04:42 PM I swear- Every time there's an updated version of a classic movie/TV show, critics are quick to use the words "cheesy" and "campy".

I saw Morgan Brittany on some talk show a few months ago and she's still pretty hot! She's gotta be 60ish.
Bobby was a fool to reject her for Pam!

Well, I agree about Morgan, but Victoria Principal isn't exactly chopped liver. :)

Both Victoria and Priscilla aren't what they used to be due to the damaging effects of plastic surgery.
ponytail 06-20-2012, 06:10 AM I finally watched it, I taped it. I loved it! I never missed Dallas when it was on years ago. It has alway been a favorite of mine. I was disappointed Ray and Lucy had cameos. I always loved Ray. I think they should have made the sons taller than their dads but J.R. and Bobby I think were shorter than Jock.
