View Full Version : David Hyde Pierce makes the show for me
Blanche&Rosefan 06-10-2012, 03:23 PM I don't mean to offend fans of Frasier with my opinion but with that said, I am not a fan of Kelsey Grammer or Frasier. I cannot get past how arrogant and pompous the character of Frasier behaves in episode after episode. He is also incredibly whinny. On the other hand, Niles/David are a constant highlight. David plays the longing Niles feels for Daphane perfectly, he is a brilliant physical comedian as well. My question is, anyone here more of a fan of Niles then Frasier?

Ha!! Well you came to the right place. A lot of us here agree. I explained why Niles and not Frasier in a couple of topics, including this topic (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=294157).
I don't hate Frasier but he's my least favorite character on the show. And I can't stand the way he treats the women he's in relationships with. He can't do right by a woman to save his life!
Leigh Ann 06-11-2012, 09:28 AM Oh yes, Niles is the best! :) I like him better than Frasier too. But Frasier's ok.
Blanche&Rosefan 06-11-2012, 07:45 PM I'm glad to see I am not alone in my opinion. I started watching Frasier just within the last few months and at first, I thought of tuning out because as I say, I didn't really care for Frasier and his always whinny and pompous ways. Then, I started to take notice of David/Niles and how it always seemed to be he who makes me laugh or feel for Niles and his yearning for Daphne. Now, I am glad I gave the show a chance because Niles and Daphne had one of the great television romances. Does anyone here know what Mr. Hyde-Pierce is working on now? Wouldn't it be fantastic to see him on Hot In Cleveland with Jane Leeves?
Schmoopie 06-12-2012, 12:39 AM Welcome to the board and I'm sure you'll figure out pretty quick that I absolutely adore DHP. I have read so many places and heard so many times (including from my husband) that Niles is the best thing about Frasier. I mean it's hard to deny that when in the first episode a line that Niles says got the only applause from the audience! I still think that's so awesome!
I started watching back in 2010 and when I was finally able to watch every show in order, I just fell in love with Niles/DHP a million times over. It was seeing him on Frsaier that made me want to watch more of his movies and learn more about him. I'd already seen "Sleepless In Seattle" a thousand times-since it's my all-time favorite movie, but since then I've watched as many movies/TV appearances of his that I can. Now my mission in life is to meet him because I seriously want to hug him.
Oh, I should also add that I've written to him three times but so far I've yet to hear from him or meet him. But I keep hoping.

Not sure what he's doing now, but he's been in a few plays recently, and did a movie, The Perfect Host. I think they want to get him on Hot in Cleveland, but scheduling has been an issue. It was be awesome to see him on though, and I think we're all anxiously waiting for it! :)
kattviews 06-12-2012, 10:55 AM I loved both brothers - Frasier & Niles.
Speaking of Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, Kelsey is Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons, David play Sideshow Bob's brother, Cecil!
The Simpsons episode was funny as hell.

I think that he and Brian are trying to get "Shoulda Been You" on Broadway and I'm sure he's been doing plays and so forth. Of course none of them are near here but still. Just sayin...
Oh, and I know that he just did a piano concert in Chicago and he's going to do a benefit of some sorts in Massachusetts. I would have LOVED to have seen that piano concert especially since I have 'heard' him say in interviews that his music is personal and he doesn't really like to play for anyone. I bet it was amazing... Sigh...
BTW, here's his unofficial website and it looks like they've started updating it again. They had stopped for a while. http://www.davidhydepierce.org/

Yeah, I'm sure that concert was amazing...I would've loved to have heard him play too. It was great that he did that, if he doesn't like to play for anyone.
andress_jade 06-13-2012, 04:18 PM It really is too bad that he doesn't like to play for anyone because when he played the piano when he was Niles on the show, he was amazing.
I can understand though why he wouldn't want to share his music with anyone.

Agreed... except not wanting to share his music with anyone... that part I don't understand. He had intended on becoming a concert pianist at first, so, that certainly would involve sharing his music, so if then, then why not now? It's not like he doesn't like to play... and if it's because he doesn't think he's good enough or something like that, well then that's just ridiculous. But, I do respect whatever it is he wants to do. Just don't understand it, really.

From what I understood from whatever interview I saw that comment in, I think he was saying that his music is something he does for enjoyment and he likes to keep it to himself. I guess he doesn't want it to become like a second career where he's asked to do CD's and concerts. That concert in Chicago was with a famous composer, so I'm sure he was more than happy to participate.
It didn't sound to me like it had anything to do with his thinking he wasn't good enough. That would be awful to think that he feels that way. I'm still a bit "upset" about 'hearing' him say that he doesn't like seeing himself in syndication b/c he looks so different now. Awww... Made me want to hug him more than I already do! And y'all know that's saying a LOT!
Blanche&Rosefan 07-08-2012, 03:32 PM I'm watching today's marathon on Hallmark and I will say it again, it is Mr. Hyde Pierce who keeps me tuning in. I find him charming and such a talented man. During the marathon they were giving facts about the show and one of them was that at first Frasier was not supposed to have a brother but then someone (a producer?) saw Mr. Hyde Pierce and thought he looked so much like a young Kelsey Grammer that they created the role just for him. First of all, I am so glad they did because I could not imagine the show without him and secondly I have to say, I don't really think Mr. Hyde Pierce looks like Kelsey Grammer at all, do any of you?

Actually they do look a lot alike, I made a thread with this particular subject. I posted a picture of a young Kelsey Grammer and one of DHP, and let me tell you the resemblance is uncanny!

Blanche&Rosefan 07-08-2012, 05:02 PM Andres Jade thanks for the photos, looking at the two together I can clearly see the resemblance now, they indeed could pass for brothers, though with my soft spot for Mr. Hyde Pierce I think he is just a cutie and for some reason, not so much Kelsey Grammer.

I remember when I first started watching I did think they looked a lot alike, but now they look nothing alike to me because I'm one of the thousands of women who happen to be completely in love with Niles. :biglove:
And by the way, that marathon is on season six now, and Niles looks particularly gorgeous in season six. :D

Yes he does! :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:
I know I've mentioned this before but one night I had Cheers on and I had gone into the kitchen for some reason. I came back and when I glanced at the TV I swear I did a double take when I thought I saw Niles sitting at the Cheers bar. Turns out it was a very old episode of Cheers and I was seeing Kelsey Grammer.
