View Full Version : This statement by Cliff was more suited for Good Times in season 1
TVFactFan 06-07-2012, 03:21 PM When Theo wanted a $94 shirt and Cliff though it was too expensive and said
"The only time a 14 year old boy should wear a $94 shirt is when he is on stage with his four brothers"
Now this reference to the Jackson 5 made no sense because at that time the Jackson brothers were no longer singing together so not sure why it was in the script. Seemed like this reference made more sense for Good Times in 1974 because that was the era of the Jackson 5 not 1984

Not exactly.
The Jacksons were performing together in 1984 "Victory", but they were 6, not five, and they were still widely known as the former Jackson 5, even though MJ was no 14 year old boy. The important thing was the reference and that much of the audience got the joke.

Well he could have been talking about New Edition since they was the 80's version of the Jackson Five. He never named the group:lol:
Bronson 08-19-2012, 01:36 AM Still $94 for a shirt is outragious.
TVFactFan 08-19-2012, 01:41 AM The statement of the episode
"Theo I don't have a 94 dollar shirt and I have a job"
MurphyCarmichael 08-31-2012, 02:23 PM $95 for a shirt is crazy! I would not pay that for a shirt either. I think that was a good line and was funny. Heck, it is still funny today. It may have been more funny on Good Times since they were in the 70s, but I think it is still a good line in any decade.

Even when you are employed, unless you are filthy rich you would not be spending 95 dollars on a shirt

I agree with that. That is too much in my opinion even in 2012.

Come on. We all knew who he was talking about. Loud and clear. :D

Not really because it was another group that was HOT at the time that episode aired. The jacksons were all separated and no longer singing together

Who said it had to be a current group? Besides, what were the other groups that had a five brothers who were family members?

Right, so that means I should stick to my original statement and that it shouldn't have been in the script because they were not singing together anymore
That's like a black show making a reference to the group "Soul for Real" in 2005 when the group was out in 1995

Neither JJ or Michael from Good Times would ever consider asking their father for a $94 shirt.

Soul for real is not as known as the Jacksons. You'd need a bigger/well known group with actual brothers to back up this argument. People knew who the Jacksons were no matter what decade which is what makes the joke work no matter the decade as the Jackson family is legendary.
