View Full Version : Mark-Paul Gosselaar Says 'Saved By The Bell' Was Not A Great Show!?!
Brian Damage 06-06-2012, 09:25 PM Mark-Paul Gosselaar, you can head straight to Mr. Belding's office. The star of "Franklin & Bash" told Yahoo! TV that "Saved by the Bell," the '90s cult-hit teen series that launched his career is "not a great show."
Gosselaar called the "Saved by the Bell" writing "hokey" and said the show is "very much a piece of that time." Can you blame him? Take for example, his notorious giant cell phone or the now classic Jessie-Spano-gets-addicted-to-caffeine-pills scene.

Schmoopie 06-07-2012, 03:48 AM Well I kind of agree with him that the writing wasn't that great and that it had some really corny moments, but it was more of a 'guilty pleasure' of mine since I was a bit too old for that show when I found it. I used to tape them and I kept all the episodes! Guess I should probably get them on DVD eventually!
hawkeye123 06-07-2012, 04:43 AM I thought it was a good show.Maybe the writing wasn't the greatest. But i was a fan of it.He shouldnt be saying that.It was the greatest thing he was ever involved in tv whise in my opionion.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar created an internet firestorm this week when he said that beloved '90s sitcom "Saved By The Bell" was "not a great show."
In an interview with TMZ, Gosselaar clarified his comments about the show that made him a star, and insisted they were "taken out of context" in the Yahoo interview.
Gosselaar told TMZ that he is "proud of that show," and noted that "everything I've ever done after the show has pointed to me having nothing but respect for it."
The current "Franklin & Bash" star also expanded on his remarks about "Saved By The Bell's" "hokey" writing, which he called "very much a piece of that time."
"That's why people like it!" Gosselaar mused. "I wasn't saying it was a bad show, just that the writing reflected" the era in which it was made.
The writer of the Yahoo interview has responded to Gosselaar's assertion that his words were misrepresented, telling TMZ that "I stand by my story 100 percent" and that Gosselaar's "not a great show" statement was a direct quote that he has on tape.

Yeah me sitting in my apartment with the lights off is a better show than jersey shore:lol:
McGillicuddy 06-09-2012, 03:52 PM I thought with Snookie pregnant and the Twituation in re-hab, that would be the end of Jersey Shore. Unfortunately, I wrong.
yankeesrj12 06-10-2012, 01:08 AM Well, he is right, it's just not good. I thought the show was excellent as a kid, but I grew up and watched again - yikes! The show is over-the-top and corny as hell, but it was meant to be. It aired on Saturday mornings and was supposed to target young kids and teenagers.
I can see why he says it's not good though, he's grown and has a more mature look at shows now. If he said the show was one of the greatest in history, then we would have a problem.
simmytbone 06-10-2012, 03:11 AM Not to be off topic, but the only problem with Saved by the Bell was The New Class killed the show
I wonder what he thought of The College Years and The New Class
The College Years was pretty good, but then, it got bad when they added Dean McMahon to the cast and it was up against Full House and Rescue 911

I don't know how anything can lose to Full House. Even Jersey Shore:lol:

Full House was in the top 30 for 7 years in a row, cracking the top 10 from 1991-1993. And being as how ratings meant a lot more back in the '90s, I'd say Full House was a fairly highly rated show.
The Brady Bunch may have Full House beat in the "corniest family sitcom" category.

I haven't watched the entire series all the way through in almost a decade (2003-2004). It was definitely in my top 5 shows growing up (Saved By The Bell was in my top 10, lol). I am amazed at the staying power of Full House. It's on Teen Nick every day in two hour blocks (I have it on as I type!). I don't think this show has ever been off the air in 25 years. I only recall a few months gap in 2002/2003, when it switched from TBS to Nick at Nite. Saved By The Bell also has massive staying power, as it also airs in two hour blocks daily, and hasn't left the air since 1989 (give or take a small hiatus here and there).
