Keith. Yes.

Carl & Judy. NO They were a waste of space and time.

With Carl character I think they should have left him in his repair shop and they could have developed some story lines from there, have him become a friend of the family. But having him become romantically involved with Florida was so out of place. If they wanted to have a male/daddy figure on the show, the producers/writers should have brought back Louis Gossett.

I agree with what you said about Carl and that Judy girl was a joke. What were the writers smoking when they wrote the episode she was in?

I liked Keith (except when he was drunk and hit Thelma) - Ben Powers was a really cute guy back in those days. I think he had a lot of chemistry with Bern Nadette and family chemistry with the others.

Florida and Keith had a really nice mother-in-law/son-in-law relationship. Then and now, that's a rarity on sitcoms. I liked how he called her "Mama" just like Thelma, JJ, and Michael did.

They sure did, you rarely saw any confrontation between them.

That said, Florida was not in the episode where Keith got drunk and slapped Thelma.

There were quite a few episodes in that final season where either Florida or JJ were absent. I know some people have thought it was about a rumored feud between Rolle and Walker. But then again, the ratings had dropped significantly and the show wasn't bringing in the kind of money it had been before. The producers had promised Rolle a significant pay raise to get her back, and Walker had to be making more than anyone else in the cast in Season 5. I wonder if they just couldn't afford to feature both in every episode. Just my own theory, of course...

I guess Jimmy Walker and Esther Rolle was on another comedy tour which explains his absence in so many eps. Or only agreed to appear in a certain number.

True, who knows what their agents negotiated on their behalf?

DING DING DING! We have a winner! I swear I picked Keith and said no to the other two. I thought Judy was a sweetheart but she didn't fit to me. Carl wasn't bad but inappropriate for the timing. James dies five months prior to and Florida is going on a date with the man and marries this atheist at the end of the season. Esther Rolle had some great acting skills because I'm sure she was thinking "Have the producers lost their minds?"
