I can understand that there was a likable connection to many of Wally and Beavers' friends. Lumpy for Wally was a big oaf who longed for his "Daddy" when he got in trouble. Larry probably got Beaver in more trouble than any of their friends combined. Eddie Haskell easily establishes himself as the greatest wise-guy con-artist in TV sitcom history, a absolute tribute to the great style that Ken Osmond gave to "Eddie."

But Wally just seems much too likable as a person to have Eddie as a friend. There were times when Eddie had a sensitive side, although they were rare. I wonder what real-life character in the producers lives was based on Eddie? I really can't see how anyone would like to have Eddie as a friend.

I think I remember Wally saying something like, "You got to have a best friend" when Beaver asked him why he was friends with Eddie. Not sure if that was the exct words or not, but it was something along those lines. But, I have to agree with you.

Eddie was one of those guys who liked to blow his own horn, show off and stir things up. But deep down inside he was a good guy. That's why Wally was friends with him. Wally was willing to put up with Eddie's nonsense because he knew Eddie was a decent guy despite his personality flaws.

I always wondered about this myself. I guess it was a formulaic strategy on the part of show's writers more than anything else. NO WAY ON EARTH would I ever have a friend like Eddie. Never ever ever!!!

I wouldn't be friends with someone like Eddie either, but he sure was fun to watch and listen to.

I think Wally knew that when Eddie was around that life was never boring. Thats why I think Wally was friends with him.

Eddie made things interesting and he was always there - I think he just hung around Wally until he "grew" on him
