I've always found it odd that Cloris had gone down to just three eps a season on MTM then got Phyllis.

I can only assume after the smash hit Rhoda was,Cloris got a great deal for doing the spinoff "Phyllis",I know she felt the character varied on "Phyllis" from episode to episode.

I can only assume she accepted because of the $$$$$.

I am sure that helped, but doesn't movie actors make more doing a film than a tv actor doing a series?

True, but more and more these days big name movie stars like Glenn Close and Kathy Bates are taking TV gigs so they don't have to spend so much on location and can tape close to home. Other than the money and being the show's star, I still don't get the idea of giving Phyllis her own show. She was OK as a supporting player, not a star. Rhoda's spinoff worked because she was so complex and well-rounded as a character already on TMTMS.

I am with you there.

Maybe also Cloris felt the time was right for a stint in a sitcom as she wasn't a regular character on MTMS.

Possibly, but wasn't that her own decision because of her movie career?

I agree about the focus. Who in their right mind says no to their own show?

I think Valerie Harper did initially and so did the Ropers.

So did Isabel Sanford, initially, when The Jeffersons spinoff from All in the Family was originally pitched.
