View Full Version : Weakest season with Redd Foxx? Season 1, 5, or 6?
TVFactFan 06-02-2012, 03:15 AM I always considered the best seasons to be 2 and 3 and 4 was with Grady, but out of the seasons with Fred, which one do you think was the weakest?
Season 1 because of the British scripts?
Season 5 because of Janet and Lamont?
Season 6 because of horrible eps?
I will go with season six mainly because of the episode Sargeant Gork
Skywalker 06-02-2012, 03:25 PM Season 6 was the worst. I think there was only 1 really good episode "Committee Man". A few were ok, but others were awful like the Hawaiian Connection episodes, Fred meets Redd and the ones that dealt with Aunt Esther adopting a kid who looked like a grown man.
TVFactFan 06-02-2012, 03:53 PM Season 6 was the worst. I think there was only 1 really good episode "Committee Man". A few were ok, but others were awful like the Hawaiian Connection episodes, Fred meets Redd and the ones that dealt with Aunt Esther adopting a kid who looked like a grown man.
Fred Meets Redd was dumb and the Esther adopting a son. ALso the episode CAROL. Worst episode of the series. The only episode that stood out was the last one which was the one when Fred went back to school
Cloud9 Lorraine 06-02-2012, 04:11 PM IMO, I wouldn't even include season 1, which I thought was brilliant. Imagine watching for the first time in 1972 as the season unfolded. Every week an episode aired. Crossed Swords, Happy Birthday Pop, Here Comes the Bride The Copper Caper, A Matter of Life and Breath, and so on. Week by week, the show in it's infancy developed.
Both Seasons 5 & 6 are pretty weak with a golden moment or two in each. But I'd give the edge to the worst season to season 6 due to the Hawaiian trilogy. I didn't enjoy one minute of that. Although the Oddfather in season 5 was unwatchable.

OH YES!!!, Godfather when he was in that hospital room acting like a NUT. Yes the 2nd worst episode behind Carol
magellan333 06-02-2012, 06:13 PM I will cast a vote for Season 6 as that was when Fred had his church. Horrible Episode!

Yes another crappy episode
rollo's girl 06-04-2012, 11:34 AM season 6 was just awful to me, a waste of time and effort by everyone involved IMO, EXCEPT for "Sanford and Gong" and the episode with BB King. I love the episodes where the cast does musical numbers and these were two of the very best I think.

The B.B King episode and the one when Fred goes back to school are the main highlights in season 6
GARFIELDKOOL 06-10-2012, 04:36 PM Season 5 was bad, very bad. I don't know what the hell the producers and writers were thinking when they made those crappy episodes. I will admit, season 6 wasn't that good, but to me it was like a rebound of season 5. I actually found episodes of season 6 watchable, but season 5 was an embarrasment of the show.

Seem like the show lost momentum after Redd Foxx Return

right. he came back and the show wasn't the same. After he came back, we saw Fritzi Burr in multiple roles.... I didn't like her. Rodney, he was an unfunny cornball, Frank Nelson, as talented as he was, he didn't belong on the show. Don't get me started on Hoppy's mother either. It was like a whole new production and writing team.

I did like the episode when Fred and Lamont was dancing on stage in season 5. Both had on tuxedos

yes, that was great. Like I said, any show where the cast did musical numbers was super. Fans got to see more aspects of their talents, and many of the numbers had stuff in them that cracked me up (like Fred in the pink hula skirt, or he and Esther trading insults while singing "Down By the Old Mill Stream" during the Mrs. Watts Business Woman pageant). .

Esther....."I was 16"
Fred........"That was your shoe size"
Eather......."A beauty queen"
Fred........."Queen Kong"

neutron66 06-19-2012, 12:17 PM season 1 portrayed the frustrations in the lives of African American Life in the inner city ghetto i enjoyed season 1 of sanford and son because it only focused on two different people lamont and fred who were always fighting each other are about to cuss each other out they did their best at hurting each others feeings they were also a little bit racist or being prejudice or having negative views about how they see other people they did have one thing in common they were both 2 poor black men looking for a easy and desperate way to get money from total strangers in the junk bussinese but always backfired at the end of the show plus the first season lamont looked furious and upset bacause his father never gives him privacy are does things that bugs him, plus in season one it wasent to many people in the show like grady, aunt easter, bubba, woody and other cast members, season 1 felt more realistic to me in the later seasons it seemed wacky kinda reminded me of a 70's family matters show without steve urkle lol

They wrote a good portion of those awful (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068128/board/flat/184432410?p=1) fourth, fifth and sixth seasons. They are also responsible for the general tone of the show (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068128/board/flat/228654340?p=1) during those last seasons (https://web.archive.org/web/20070108222200/http://www.jumptheshark.com/s/sanfordandson.htm) as their influence (as producers) grew larger since the main actors did not seem to give a damn about the quality of the show.
BigManMike 03-14-2015, 11:06 PM I actually liked Season 1 best. It was nice having just Fred and Lamont. The others were alright on occasion but they really wore out their welcome in the last two seasons, although I did enjoy the Grady episodes in Seasons 3 and 4 when Fred was gone. Plus, I really liked Fred's friend Melvin in Season 1 and I wish he could have been there longer.
Crusinforabrusin 01-02-2016, 10:18 PM Season 1. Did not like the British scripts at all.

Fred was too soft in season 1

Agreed.

I loved the Steptoe and Son adaptations of Season One, though... I conjfess the entire series now gives me a pleasant nostalgia.
Need to refresh on the reality of Sanford, soon.
:)

Oh yeah... Melvin:
"I want my daddy's records."
Greatest scene ever.
