had been Lucy's husband in this series, instead of her brother-in-law? I mean he basically fulfilled the male figure role in both her life and in the kids' lives. It would have been one way to distinguish this series from The Lucy Show. Casual TV viewers simply think they are once again playing Lucy the secretary and Mr. Mooney the boss anyway. Were they opposed to seeing Lucy and Gale in what would have been somewhat of a romantic setting? It would have been a change in the plotlines for sure

Lucy was opposed to it. She was quoted as saying that viewers wouldn't want to see her in anyone's arms but Desi's. She was probably right. Notice that throughout TLS and HL, Lucy never had a permanent boyfriend, nor did you ever see her kiss any of her dates. She had similar sentiments about Vivian Vance, refusing to replace her after she left the show because she felt Vivian was irreplaceable.

Maybe you're missing the obvious, Lucy would not have wanted someone as old and balding portraying her husband on the series. :D

Yeah, that's true. I wouldn't have minded seeing her married, but probably not to Uncle Harry!

I'm not saying he would have been Uncle Harry...he would have been the husband from the start and not that character.

Neither would I, BUT, she tried that out on her previous series The Lucy Show when she had her second husband act as her boyfriend and that didn't do that well. Trouble was she was shown everywhere married to Desi on I Love Lucy and was competing with that image.

The only time that the "Lucy" character had a husband, besides I Love Lucy was on the Lucy Calls The President Special. Ed McMann played husband, Floyd Whittikar. A few years later on Life With Lucy, she was once again portrayed as a widow.

When did her husband act as her boyfriend on The Lucy Show? I don't remember that.

In the episode Gary (or whatever his character's name was) took her golfing. I think it was a "Danfield" episode.

^That's not the same thing. Lucy Carmichael was never shown MARRIED. The widow/single thing was done on The Lucy Show--so Here's Lucy would have been refreshing to show an older married Lucy with the older teens.

I think when Desi Jr. left the show, they should have had Lucy finally get a steady boyfriend and got married. Her boyfriend could have been someone who owned his own business in the same building that she worked. Wouldn't it have been nice if Harry Carter found someone as well? The widow status just went on too long in this series.

I guess it was too painful for Lucy to be married again as a character on television after Desi.

Was Harry Carter a widower, or was he a life long bachelor?

Also, I thought it was always strange that Harry would have had to been the brother of Lucy's late husband, and yet Mr. Carter never ever was mentioned by name. Since he was Lucy's husband, Harry's brother and Kim & Craigs' father, plus the link to Lucy and Harry being related, you'd think at least some reference would be made to him.

Getting back to the original question, after being her boss, Mr. Mooney on The Lucy Show, that would have been really strange for Gale to suddenly be playing her husband.

Oh he was definitely a lifelong bachelor, who the hell would ever have tolerated being married to that pain in the ass loser. Yelling and screaming all the time, LOL!

Gale Gordon's genius was playing characters bedeviled by the female protaganist of the series in which he appeared. He was equally good in Our Miss Brooks, Pete and Gladys and Dennis The Menace (yeah, I know, Dennis was a kid). I've never failed to laugh at the man's slow burns and double-takes. If the Lucy Carmichael character had been married to him, it would have seemed more like warmed-over I Love Lucy. I would have liked to see some great character actress like Reta Shaw or Madge Blake play Irma, his unseen wife on The Lucy Show. I can just hear one or the other chastising him for somthing. Theodore!!!

His female protaganist on DTM would be Mrs. Elkins!

Yeah! Irene Tedrow! She'd be great. On Our Miss Brooks, he played high school principal Osgood Conklin, who had a lovely daughter, Harriet, and an occaisionally seen on-screen wife, Martha, played most often by Paula Winslowe. This family surrounding the character tended to make Gale Gordon's portrayal more human-seeming while losing none of the humor. Mrs. Conklin was a very nice, attractive older character that sort-of balanced Osgood's blustery ways. Miss Brooks was undeniably his nemesis however, and all the slow-burns and great double takes were very much in evidence.

I posted something similar to this on another thread! I liked how they had Uncle Harry as her brother in law and boss, but I was thinking at the end of the series for them to finally get together and get married. ;) All his yelling at her was just because he secretly loved her and thought he couldn't have her. ;)

I liked them together working in the office, but I guess they could have had them married all along, they could have been husband and wife working together. But I still like the idea of them getting together at the end! A good way to close the series! ;)

It wouldn't be incest, he was her brother in law, not her brother!!!

If they got married right after Lucy's husband died, that would have been inappropriate. But after a good amount of time if they really loved each other, there would be nothing wrong with a woman marrying her brother in law! IMO! ;)

There was an episode in S5 where Lucy starts making a pass at Harry as a way to stall him so he doesn't discover one of her disasters. If she were doing that to anyone else it would have been fine, but watching her make a pass at Harry was kind of creepy. :eek2:

Oh God no. The show probably wouldn't have been good if they were married. I am glad that Gale Gordons character was only Lucille's brother in law
