David Hasselhoff on How Leonardo DiCaprio Dodged the "Baywatch" Bullet

Jeremy Jackson once said that he had beaten out Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Hobie, your onscreen son, on "Baywatch".

Was that true, do you remember?

Yeah, it was true! You know what, it was the best thing to happen to Leonardo DiCaprio. [Laughs]

I saw Leonardo DiCaprio and I said, ‘You know what, that was the best thing that ever happened to you! You would have never gotten Titanic and have been this big star. You’d be like Jeremy Jackson and David Hasselhoff, looking for work.’ Ha!

It's funny, because Jeremy Jackson wasn't even the original Hobie. Baywatch's one and only season on network TV (NBC) from 1989-90 featured Brandon Call in the role. Between NBC's cancellation of the show in 1990 and it coming back in first-run syndication in 1991, Brandon Call landed the role of J.T. Lambert on Step By Step (which debuted in the fall of 1991) and thus wasn't available to play Hobie again. Funny how things turn out that way, because his run on SBS was almost as long as Jeremy Jackson's as Hobie!!

The first season of the show, with Brandon Call as Hobie, is on DVD. The show seemed to have more edge and a darker side when it was on NBC, as opposed to the somewhat fluffy escapist fare it was in first-run syndication.
